Suspension opinion

My truck came with a 3" Revtek spacer lift which drives like hell. I'm changing it out ASAP. I received quotes for 2 different options. It's a 2013 DC TRD. I'm running 265/70/17 Duratracs. It's my dd with the occasional fire road and hunting trips (no hardcore off roading). I travel 120kms of highway to and from work daily. I want 2.5" of lift total. These my seem priced a little high but keep in mind I'm in Canada.

Option 1: (3 week wait to arrive)
Icon coilovers installed w/ alignment = $1975

Option 2: (can be at my door in 3 days)
Toytec Coilovers - $998.75
LR UCA - $599.95
Bolts for UCA - $38.80
Total: $1637.50
*no alignment or installation included

I'm trying to stay "around" $2000. Obviously I think option 1 with new UCA's would be better but it's not in the budget. I'm looking for a "smooth" ride. Bumps, potholes, cracks and speed bumps are knocking my fillings out at the moment. I'm also considering maybe just the Toytec coilovers w/o the LR UCA (are the UCA's worth the extra $600 w/ a 2.5" lift setting?) which would put my at $1000 plus install. Any input?

If you're getting coil overs, PLEASE install yourself. Dude its too easy.... no spring compressors, just remove the tie rod, unbolt the bottom eye bolt, then remove the 3 top bolts. DONE. its out, and replace with the new one. Charging someone for labor is ridiculous.

UCAs are also stupid easy. Remove the spindle (1 nut i think) then one long bolt and a nut to remove and its out

Icon 2.5's and LR UCAs are cheaper than your option 1.

Option 3: Go to Rock Auto and order two Rancho QuickLift P/N

$193 RS999915 Suspension Strut and Coil Spring Assembly

RS999915 complete spring/shock assemblies and install them yourself. $435 CAD shipped.



Ranchos are relatively new so they aren't mentioned as often for Tacoma lifts as Bilstein or Toytec, but the few users on TW who run them like them.

 

Icon's seem to be the favorite. As far as a dd, and in town use would they be that much better than the Toytecs? I don't do any off roading other than hunting a week out of the year and that's basically dirt raods. I hear they're amazing and understand they're much better off road but for city use it's about $500 more than the Toytec coilovers. I guess I can "afford" the $500, but 5 bills is 5 bills I could use for something else down the road. For my use I'm under the impression the Icon may be overkill. I'm assuming either option is much better than the current 3" Revtek. Kinna turned off about the rebuild thing too. $175 per side here and I can afford to loose my truck for a few days.

Go with the icons your going to be much happier than using toytech if your budget allows. Not saying toytech are bad but from experience there's a night and day difference. Install yourself super easy and get the firestone lifetime alignment. If getting standard coil overs UCA's are not needed but I would recommend them at some point you will notice a big difference. Here's some of my older stuff just sitting around the garage collecting dust so trust me and do some research on the forum and get informed before a purchase.

 

Man if your not hard core wheeling why not just do some 5100's and your choice of coils? Save you a ton of cash, and they would be fine for what you are doing. But don't get me wrong of you got the cash for Icons than do that!

Ya some day ill post all the crap lying around for sale. Im more of a buyer than a seller and tend to just throw stuff away, much easier than trying to sell stuff not needed anymore.

I'm similar. Every time I replace a working part with something else, I just sit in the garage and let it collect dust. If/when I get rid of my truck, I'll give it all to the new owner.

 

Leaning towards the Toytec coilovers because:
- they're $500 cheaper
- I rarely go off road
- they're readily available here in the city (can have them in 3 days)

Icons
- overall better coilover from what I've read
- probably overkill for city use
- $300 here in the city to rebuild them plus the loss of my truck which I need
- $500 more
- have to wait 3-4 weeks to get them in

Considered the 5100 with 885 but the 885 are 2 weeks to come in. I'm annoyed with 160kms of commuting a day to work with the Rektek spacer lift that came with the truck. I think the Toytec's should serve their purpose for me.

 

Looks like you made your decision and I think you'd be happy. Go for it.
It's going to ride like butter compared to the spacer lift.

Why not get Icon's for $1200 and install yourself. Leaves you with 800 for UCA's (on a 2k budget).

Install should be 30min/side at most. Just remove the wheel, ubolt the old coilover assembly and bolt in the coil overs (4 nuts total: three 14mm top nuts and one - 19mm I think - bottom bolt/nut to remove).

 

Icons are $1500 + tax here in Edmonton. Forget about shipping/duty/exchange rates from states. Even if I found them in the USA at $800 by the time they're at me door it's $1500. Been there done that before with other goods.

 

Get them shipped USPS and all you have to do is pay GST / PST , no duty on car parts thankd to NAFTA
