Took my truck to Firestone to get aligned and the tech told me that he was obligated to let me know that because my wheels are painted black (TRD Trail Team) that his equipment would scratch it. At first I didn't know whether or not he was pulling my leg and not wanting to deal with me because I am supposed to get a 25% discount on alignments and I had to make a few phone calls to get them to comply.

However I googled the problem and sure enough it happens a lot. So I called another local shop (independent small business) and I asked if he was sure he wouldn't scratch my rims. Said he'd never heard of that problem and could do it but to call him the next day. So I called him today, and was a bit rude. Maybe he was offended that I asked if he was sure they wouldn't scratch? He told me to take my business elsewhere and I feel I was very nice.

What do I do? I don't want to call around asking before getting your feedback so that I don't get blown off by all the tire shops. If anyone has experience with this please let me know. I would rather not A) Have scratched rims and B) Have a tire shop have to replace them on their dollar.

    Thank you!

A couple of options. If you have your original rims get your alignment with those on so a scratch doesn't matter. Find an alignment shop that uses newer technology where they strap the alignment sensor to your wheel so it doesn't scratch it. Last but not least just deal with it and get some black touch up paint for the small nicks that their equipment puts in your rims.

The old rims are 20" chrome that I am selling right now so I really don't want to scratch those lol

I had bad experience as mentioned above by asking one guy if he wouldn't scratch. As for touch up paint I have never used it, how well can it be made to look?

The touch up paint will still be noticeable. I think it's something you might have to just deal with.

Well the reason I am getting it aligned is because I just lifted it and it is recommended. It is not hard to drive nor does it wander, but of course it is not perfectly straight. In that condition will the tires wear unevenly?

I've had black wheels on everything I own. I don't worry so much about a scratch here or there. Thing is gonna see dirt, road salt, rocks, bushes, etc so it is bound to be scuffed a time or two.

I'll get one, I just need to find time. It seems like the only way to do anything in the adult world is to take off of work, and a day's pay is hard to give up when you are shooting for overtime hours. I think I know a shop that won't scratch but their hours are difficult.
