I have a 2013 Tacoma, 4.0 v6. There is a knocking noise in motor between 800 and 1300 rpm's while the engine is idling between those RPM's. When I step on the gas lightly while in park, I bring the RPM's up to between 800 and 1300 and that is when the knocking is most noticable and when I let off the gas and the motor decelerates the knocking continues in the range I noted and then goes away. It didn't start becoming noticeable until about 10'00 miles. I use 92 octane fuel and it is definitely not pinging. I can tell the difference between pinging and valve train noise but this is a different knock. Its a great motor but I just want to find out about the knock. ???

I have the exact same issue, does anyone know about a fix for this issue? Also mine seems worse after an oil change maybe the first week or two but, still seems to be there most of the time just worse after oil change. Anyone know? Thanks

I don't know if you have detonation, but I've seen a lot of engine knock and pinging post recently. I wonder if Toyota tweeked the ECU maps making the tricks more susceptible to detonation.

I filled up with 93 yesterday and my knock is gone. Not sure about the mapping.

I am certain the knock is NOT detonation or pinging. Its not fuel related. Its a knock the way I initially described it. It also happens on deceleration in the same rpm range.

We have a new fix for this. It was due to spark knock/detonation. You can have your ECU recalibrated at any toyota dealer.
    Refer to TSB

    Yeah.
Hmm. If I don't have the knock (I always run the highest octane), should I bother with this?

It's a calibration issue that should fix the majority of the ones having an issue. We have had some that do it one day and not the other. I got pretty good at reproducing the sound constantly. About 1100-1400 rpms under a very light load like going uphill around 15-25mph. Most people dont drive under a light load so they will never notice this lol

    This affects 2012-2014 V6 models.
