I have an Ultragauge and monitor coolant temps regularly. Lately, mine (2006 2TR-FE with 75,000 on the odo) has been about 5-10 degrees higher than normal. Usually hangs between 190 - 194 in summer, but has been up to 199 in the last few weeks. Oil was recently changed and coolant levels are fine. The fan clutch seems okay too. I'm thinking thermostat, and will change it out this week. Just wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas? Thanks!!

Forgot to mention that the lower coolant hose is cooler relative to the upper hose when checked after the engine is warmed up. Cooler, not cool, if you know what im saying.

A thermostat is usually either good or it's not. You're probably worrying about a non problem.

Mine 2.7 has been running at 194 to 204 since I got an UltraGauge in january. In the winter cold it never got above 200 and now on the hottest days it doesn't get to 205. I've changed the oil twice since january, and am coming up on the third change. I'm going to be doing a coolant flush tomorrow, not because I think it will do anything. I just think it is time.

What should these engines be running at, and are my temps within reason? No hard towing just extended run times.

Coolant is long life, interval 100K or 10 years. Kind of a waste at 3 years unless you're really putting on the miles.

With scangauge I'm at 197F normally, but a little lower in winter running the heat, and a little hotter up to 204F.

    OP you are probably fine.

Thanks for the input guys, sounds like I'm worrying about nothing based on your own coolant temperature observations. I got the thermostat but probably won't install it until the old one fails. By the way, the coolant was "flushed" when the dealer replaced the water pump under warranty at 33,000 miles. Thanks again.

That's what I have been reading. I'm about 35k away from the recommended, but I just took the radiator cap off the other day and there was some chunky stuff on the bottom of the cap. Just two small pieces that were 3/16" long and 1/16" wide maybe. I read on another thread where sometimes thread dope can get in the system when the water pump is put in or changed if an excessive amount is used. I bought used with 8k on it and as far as I know it's the original water pump.

Short version- It doesn't need to be changed, but I want to see what comes out of it more than anything.
