2009 Double Cab Rear Door Speaker Issue

I'm getting ready to start an install and am hoping some of you may be able to clarify something for me. I just got my new '09 Double Cab Sport a couple of weeks ago. Got everything ready to go except the rear speakers, which is where my question comes in.

I have run into somewhat conflicting info about what will actually work in the rear doors. Not relative so much to diameter or mounting depth, but as to the tweeters on certain coax speakers protruding past the woofers to point of hitting and conflicting with the factory speaker grills/covers on the door panels, thus preventing them to be reinstalled without modification (not an option for me). Mr. Marv is providing my adapters, and he's pretty sure I won't have a problem. I've seen adapters with these specs used without issue on speakers like the Image Dynamics CTX65, which appears to have a somewhat protruding tweeter. I'm also considering the Polk Audio MM651.

I did see the detailed install info from Octane151, which showed the CTX65 in the reat door and was encouraging. Anyone with solid info or real world experience, please offer your information! It would be greatly appreciated.

 

I had the CTX 65s in my rear doors for a while. The tweets on those swivel and will hit the door panels if you have them fully cranked to one direction. I pointed them up only about half way and they cleared without a problem.

 

How do you like the Image Dynamics in the doors? Let's say, compared to Polks or JL's.

 

I haven't heard the others you mentioned, so I really couldn't say. You can see my current setup below on my signature. I'm running the Hybrids all the way around now and the sound is really just amazing. That I can say...

 

Having heard ALL of the JL and Polk lines, I would still take the CTX (ID's entry level drivers) over the others. NOT because of the mid, but because of the tweets. The tweets on the ID's is so smooth compared to the others. I should mantion that the Hybrid drivers are really really good. For the avg. or even more than avg. consumer the Hybrid Clarus set is a really really good choice...the Legatia drivers from Hybrid, are for purists (IMO) and just "normal" system components wont cut it.

 

i'm no stereo expert, but wouldn't the stock speakers in the rear door be sufficient for rear filler......wouldn't you want more front imaging anyway. i've heard the argument about surround sound, but to me the stock speakers fill the rear space adequeately, but in the end I guess its just personal preference.

 

Great! Thanks dreamnz....just what I wanted to know. The CTX 65 is one that I was considering, but am now leaning more towards the Alpine SPR-17C. Probably not in the same league as ID, but I'm trying to get the best sound for the least $$$, and the Alpines fit the bill and seem to be liked by most that have them. If the the 65's with the protruding tweeter worked, then I'm sure there won't be a problem with the Alpines.
