Another oil question.

I just had my 3rd "free" Toyota care oil change today and noticed on my invoice they put in 0w-20 and the past two were 5w-30. Now from searching on here I see the 4cyl. uses 0-20 and my V6 should get 5w-30. My question is, should I go back and get it changed to 5w-30 or is the 0w-20 ok for the next 5,000 miles?

Personally i would switch to 5-30. 0-20 is thin. My wifes acura uses it, and its like water. One time when I was changing the Acura's oil for the first time I spilled oil all over the engine cover because of how easily it flowed out of the jug. It surprised me. It flowed way more easily than 5-30.

 

yeah.... this is why you wont catch me in the dealer getting my oil change done. go back, and have them change it and the filter.... make sure you mark the filter to make sure they change it.... hell ask to stand by your truck while they do it to make sure.

As you can see i trust them about as far as i can throw my truck..... Not when the head service mechanic couldnt get the right tool for the driveline tsb, so i provided my tools, then couldnt read the tsb that the truck had to be at ride height... then ordered the wrong parts.... all the while i caught the oil change boy just about to start my truck with no oil in it.

5k miles was the first and last time my truck will be there for oil changes.

Ok, get it changed to the correct. I use Royal Purple so I provide my own and watch them do it. It might feel awkward but your truck is worth it.

 

That's why I've always done it myself since day one. Peace of mind to know that's it's always done right with the oil of my choice

 

Well ... now that we're on the oil change subject (sorry to jack the post) ... this is my first V-6 after 30 years of 4 bangers ... I absolutely LOVE the filter location.

That little drain hole at "6 o'clock" is for dripping oil I suspect ... where does it drain to?

 

You need to put a catch container under it. Otherwise it will drain into the engine bay.

 

Get yourself some 3/8" inside diameter clear vinyl tubing. Search for this on Amazon: "

That will fit nicely on the nipple. Take off the plug, put a few feet of tubing on it. Route it down onto the ground and place the other end into an empty beer bottle. When you crack loose the oil filter it will drain down the tube into the bottle. You should be able to replace the filter w/o having a drop of oil hit your engine bay or ground. Once it's drained, replace filter...replace the nipple until next oil change.

I'd buy a beer for the Toyota engineer who thought of this design.

The drain is for changing the filter. It drains to whatever is beneath it. So put something there! I use GOOP hand cleaner container, so I have a lid I can snap on before snaking it out

The tacoma pre runner is the easiest oil change to do yourself!
You don't even have to jack the truck up. I wont let anybody work on my toys.
Have someone show you how to do it so you know its done rite every time.
And yes 5w-30 is what you want to run

 

Thanks for all the input, I do know how to change my own oil and in the past I always have. I may just swap it out myself and specify at the next one, it took them over 2hrs to get me done yesterday and I don't have patience for that again. By the way a tire balance in $56.00 WTF?? I continue to use them because I have the 2 year Toyota care, as soon as it's gone I will be doing the services myself at my job. Only thing I really want to keep track of is all the records for the B.S. lifetime warranty it has, I work with them all the time at my job and have some decline a transmission repair because they missed an engine oil change!!

unless it's a long way away, you "paid" for an oil change, you deserve to have the correct oil put in. You shouldn't have to pay for another oil change. If you do change your own oil, at least call the stealership and speak with the shop foreman or heck, even the GM or owner about what the "mechanics" are doing.

I have an extended 7/100K bumper to bumper (purchased it online for half the cost of what they were going to sell it to me. And it is a Toyota backed warranty. Got it I think somewhere in the midwest where they sell them online jerryj@MidwestSuperstore.com. It's a Toyota dealer and they sell factory backed warranties all over the US).

Anyways back to my point, the oil change is a breeze on our trucks and as many people have experienced issues at the dealership (as I did) I just do it myself. I keep all the receipts and have a log book of milage and dates of when I do any type of maintenance.

Damn I just read your issues there, that sucks. I went out today before traveling to Mobile and checked my oil, to me it looks thick. I know what 0w-20 looks like on the end of a stick, its like water. This was thinner than a honey consistency but still appears thicker than the 0w-20. I'm still going back to get them to do it again but I think maybe the service writer wrote down the wrong weight.

0w-20 oil that they gave you is top-of-line synthetic. The 5w-30 is probably the cheapest bulk oil the dealer can buy. Even though it is a touch light, unless you are constantly bangin' on this engine, that 1 change of 0w-20 is not going to hurt a thing. If your engine is still in warranty, its on them if anything happens, cuz they put it in the engine.

 

I don't beat on the motor and I am aware its a very good synthetic, the wrong oil (in this case being thin) will not cause instant issues but a long term problem so damage under warranty will most likely not happen. I just don't know the specs of this motor, if it's not going to hurt anything then I really don't mind but if this thin oil does not lubricate to what the motor needs then I'll get it redone.
