Not sure if this is the right place for this but here goes. I just bought my first Tacoma 2 days ago. I have about 350 miles on it. The wife and I were going to try out the 4WD on some hills, but the truck would not shift into 4wd High, it would however shift into 4L. So i've read the manual, the Wife has read the manual and still no 4H. I dont want to bring it to the dealer and look like a complete idiot. I'd rather do it here. So my question is am I missing something? or should I bring it to the dealer.

It's unusual. In my experience, the transfer case won't shift into 4Lo unless it's already in 4Hi.

Good to see your wife enjoying off-roading. :)

I tried it both ways moving at about 30mph, then 10mph, and stop. to shift to 4L i needed to be stopped and in neutral. That worked like a champ. Then we took it home and I got on some grass tried a few things to go 4H still nothing. back tires spin front tires nothing. 4L it's grip and go amazing..

Take it to the dealer. Shift-on-the-fly between 2H and 4H is a basic functionality. If it doesn't work when going in a straight line, there's a malfunction somewhere.

I too just picked up a 2014 DC Sport (Silver Sky)...
read the owners manual which stated to run the 4x4 unit for 10 miles each month...

All appears to work fine and I'm confident yours will be also. Saw your Army badge...Thanks for your hard work and service to our nation. Where in MN?

That does seem odd, I have no problem getting mine into 4H and 4L.
By the way, love that color.;)

I kind'a miss the extra lever on the tranny, even if 4hi was still pushbutton on the 1st gens.

Seemed lot more solid. But that could just be my aversion to too many electronics when a simple shift will do nicely.

Hope they take care of you quickly and do it right!

Sounds like a wire is disconnected?

Since you must go through H4 to get to L4, what lights come on in H4? Does it blink or stay solid?

It is under warranty for 60,000 miles... but shouldn't be happening, of course.

Update, So I took the truck to work today and I pulled the wiring diagram up on AllData. I saw that the 2H 4H and 2L switch has a diode between 2H and 4H but is Direct to 4L. the only other components are the actual Actuator on the Xfer Case and the TCCM (Transfer Case Control Module) some minor trouble shooting and I diagnosed it as the Switch. I took it to the dealer and told them that I did some research and I think the issue is the selector switch. Guess what... they didn't believe me. lol so after a hour and a half of waiting the Service advisor says "the Tech thinks its the switch" I said great. how long till i get a new switch installed? 5-10 days. So in the mean time the Tech gouged the dash and cracked the radio bezel. blah. I seriously wanted to be the first one to mark up my new truck. Sounds like they will make it right tho. We will see. I will post Pics of the Damage tomorrow when its light so I can take a good picture. Thank you all for your input and advise.

    St. Anger

P.s. if anyone needs a Diagram I have access to AllData and Mitchell

Interesting. I still (sometimes) have problems going to/from 4L since the truck was brand new. Sometimes I have to push the clutch in, flip to 4L, it beeps, so I let the clutch back out, flip the switch back to 4H. Rinse and repeat and it engages. It's intermittent.

I've never taken it to the dealer because of this - "the Tech gouged the dash and cracked the radio bezel."

Absolutely. They damage parts while working on the truck, they replace it.

I'm not familiar with TIS, but AllData and OnDemand are the complete service manuals for just about any veh from 1985 -2013 and most of 2014.
