    as my last truck

I have no real basis to say that….

    2013 TRD OR Prerunner V6

my previous truck was a 1993 Toyota p/u 4cyl (22RE engine I think it was called?) lasted me till 285k

There is nothing wrong with my Prerunner at all at 17k miles, but there is so much more electrical stuff and it just seems more "complex" than my last truck.

Are they still built to last as long?

I think that they are really great trucks. Relaible and run a long time. Their only downfall is the frame. Are they as bulletproof as previous models? No I don't think so, but they are still very reliable. I plan on keeping my truck until my engine dies and I hop to get 350k miles or more like this guy ^^^^

My dad had a hilux that the odometer went back to 0 kms. Pretty much the reason why I got a Tacoma.

Is the issue with the frame just the premature rust? Not to downplay that but for us folks in so cal and others in AZ etc we don't really have to worry about that. I mean the frames aren't particularly weak right? No one is bending or breaking them on the trails?

No most of the rust issues are from tacomas driven on salty roads in the "snow belt". The frames aren't really weak in the sense your saying. Although there have been a few people that live in southern states on here where their frames rust similar to tacomas in the north. But its few and far between

These trucks have no electrical and run on steam if you compared them to a BMW.

    I just got rid of '11 X3.

    E-Brake is a button.
    Drive by wire.
    Shift by wire.
*Everything* is wired through the head-unit. There is no way to install another one without severely disabling the car.
Most non-OEM light bulbs throw an ECU errors.
Transmission issues? You need software update.
XDrive does not engage correctly? You need software update.
Disconnected seatbelt sensor on the passenger side? ECU error. $250 to fix.
Want to back up 1ft while the door is open? Nope. Not happening. This thing throws you back in Park!

They used to have $2000 extended warranty.
Now you get $2000 warranty, $4000 warranty and $6000 warranty. Only the $4000 and up covers electronics.

I am looking forward to many worry free years in a Tacoma, because i will be able to fix a lot of things myself

    So do we.

But otherwise Im with you. I wanted to own a 3 series ever since I got to drive an old roommates E36 M3.... But I know too many people with maintenance horror stories to ever go throught with it.

Audi guys have the same tales. And Merc.

500k was easy to make it to on 1st gen toyota trucks. i dunno about the 2nd gens.

really though by the time you get to 300k it's time for a new truck or time to rebuild the engine because it just starts to use too much oil and so forth. it gets to where you have to add a qt of oil every week or two or something like that. that's how it was on my 1988 truck anyways. so although it was still running fine and everything i sold it and moved on because i didn't have the money for a complete overhaul of the engine and all the cv joints and bushings and everything.

I used to have a '01 Jetta. By the time it hit 40K miles it required weekly quart of oil because the lifters would start knocking. Took it to 3 different VW dealers and all 3 told me flat out "This is completely within spec. There is nothing we can do about it. Just make sure you always carry a quart of oil with you". Needless to say that was my last VW vehicle

I was under the impression that they switched OEM frame manufactures (ditched Dana) for the newer ones and changed the type of coating they put on it.

Yup, I'm a BMW fan and keep up on a similar forum. New BMWs have something like 10 separate computers nowadays that control everything. You can't replace the battery w/o going to the dealer to reprogram the new one.

The last gen 5-series had one of the computers in the spare wheel well in the trunk. It's common for the drains to clog up, which naturally causes the water to run into this lowest point and crap out the computer. It's a several thousand $ repair.

Yes, the new tacos have more electronics, but as you say they are rudimentary compared to other vehicles. I've had both headlights crap out on my taco - a trip to any auto parts shop anywhere buys me a $12 replacement. Depending on what your BMW has, that same repair can run several hundred dollars.

I don't think there is any other vehicle made that beats a taco for low ownership costs.

Oh, the guy with 350K that says he doesnt even use it that hard? Not that big of a deal. The diesel guys (excluding POS 6.0L powerjoke) are pushing 500,600,700, even 1 mil while using them hard. Now thats something.

it happens on every car eventually but not at 40k. that is rediculous.

what happens is the piston rings wear out and oil gets past them and it gets burnt off by the engine.

Yep and how many engines don't forget GM did not make that engine. The best possible thing you can do is long miles for any vehicle My VW TDI had 342K on it when I sold it no engine issues. My 97 Taco had 285K on it no issues. My 2011 has 50K I expect it to run till I can no longer drive. My ex boss had a Duramax the fan fold print out went from fender to fender and down to the ground with the pages of problems. An other guy had 5 engines in 120K in his older one. No thanks I'll take my chances with the Tacoma.

As someone who has owned pretty much every generation of toyota pickup/tacoma, most driven well beyond 200,000 miles, my opinion on the 2nd gen Tacomas is "not sure".

FWIW, I had the same feeling about my 1st gen tacoma, it now has 256,000 on it and still runs great.
