How much noise is normal for A/C?

I have a 2011 thats nearing the end of her warranty. I noticed this year that when the A/C is on, i can hear a noise on the passenger side of the truck, almost down by the passenger floor board area. It comes and goes as A/C clicks on and off, and is really only noticeable at idle in park. Its difficult to describe, but kind of a growling noise or maybe a vibration.

If the truck did it last year, I don't remember it. I have read stories about things breaking and causing 2k to fix so I want to make sure this is addressed before the warranty expires, if its an issue.

So, how much noise is normal??

Sorry man, my '13 doesnt make any noise like you described. It does make a terrible noise from the A/C clutch when it first engages if i dont let it idle down on first start up. If I let it idle down or warm up, I can turn the A/C on and off at any engine speed and it wont make the noise. Dealer told me to take a video of it doing it cause they couldnt re-create it. Havn't taken video of it yet.

I would suggest taking a video of it or if you can make it do it at the dealership that would be even better, wouldnt hurt to ask 'em. But they might tell ya its "normal".

Its not the blower motor. I already had that done. This is definitely in the engine compartment. Here's a video, but the sound didn't survive the upload to Youtube very well so you may have to listen on your phone to be able to hear it.

if you've already had the TSB done maybe take out the cabin fllter and check that area out. stick a shop vac up in there. maybe leaves, twigs, pine needles hitting something. some dude on here had a dead mouse in there. other than that if you're still under warranty take it in to the dealership.

My 13 does the same thing. Every time the compressor kicks on I get a vibrating sound. Did you ever take yours in for this

Going in today or tomorrow for it. I'll post an update with what they say. Do you hear the noise in the vid? Did yours do it last year?

I couldn't here itn in the vid but then again I cant hear it thunder. But I know its ac cause I can turn the ac off while the compressor run s and it stops. And I didn't have the truck last year just bought it monday with 28k miles so it still has warranty if I need it.

I brought it in. Toyota basically said that yeah, we hear it. They attributed it to the amount of load at idle on the compressor or something. Anyway, they said if its an issue later on its documented now so they'll cover it.

It could be the engine fan. I know with my Manuel I can hear the fan clearly when I shift and it seems the only time I hear it is when the ac is on. I guess the engine works a little harder with the ac on and usually the ac is used when it's hot out. Two perfect conditions for the fan clutch to engage.

2011streaker- good to know that! My '14 (1,080 miles) makes the exact same noise! :-/. I'll mention it at the first service.
