Came home from the grocery store and heard a weird noise coming from my rear tire. Looked and found a chunk of metal in my tire. If taken out can it be patched? It's about an inch thick. I sprayed some liquid on it to see if it was spitting out bubbles and it was. I could also hear a leak coming out.

Because its a M/T I think a plug would work just fine.

Yes, they should be able to patch/plug that. Most places will use a combo patch plug.

What would be safer... Plug or patch. If I plug it myself is it hard?

I wouldn't mess with it yourself as that is a pretty large hole. Might make things worse. Just take it to the tire shop. Usually very cheap.

I used to plug tires for a living. if its wider than the plug, then no sense plug it and can patch it from the inside…but that requires dismounting or at least unseating a bead. A patch usually holds longer but have also been known to throw off the balance.
If you plug it, just go with a kit from wally world or something, make sure you ream the hole good and make it clean, but don't widen it more than it should. If the reamer is noticeably smaller, than the plug may just spit out. Make sure you have the tire aired up…I usually put it 5 or 10 pounds more than what I usually run it at. When you have the plug inside, twist it and pull it out quick.
its pretty easy to do, may need to muscle it a little.

oh and I have run 2 and 3 plugs in the same hole…but I wouldn't recommend it.

Sounds like I'm gonna take it to a tire shop and have them patch it up. Only thing I'm worried about is that I'm going to Reno this weekend and, is my tire gonna be ok to take on long drives?

Alright guys.... Got it patched and it turns out that the tire was repaired and I paid $24, and they pulled out a wheel weight. A FUCKEN WHEEL WEIGHT!!! That thing was the size of a dime. The put in a plug patch and then another patch on top of that.

    Thanks everyone for the advice.
