I'm looking to build an aluminum rack for my truck similar to the one on my '98 Tacoma.

Problem is the second gens don't have stake pockets in the composite bed, and I'm wondering how to go about attaching the rack to the bed rails? Obviously needs to be strong.

Yup! Make it the same way. Just attach it to the rails

My headache rack used feet that bolted into the bed rail tracks

So just use the plastic piece behind the slider as an anchor? Is there any drilling require to the piece? I'd like to still be able to use the sliding system if I decide to remove the rack..

No , you use bolts or T nuts that slide into the bed rail track and attach to that , the rest of the rail is completely free to use

Okay, I got ya. That would be pretty sturdy I think. Most of the force would be put onto the bedrails instead of the sliders. I think the rack would look decent on my truck as well as be very useful.
