Would 285/85/16 fit a tock 2014 Tacoma with no issues?

I was parked in a lot today next to a bright red FJ, I don't know what year, had the black Trail Teams type wheels 16" with red TRD in the center cap. Tires were 285/85/16 BFG All-Terrain KO's.

Was wondering if I could run the same size on my '14, Tacoma, no-lift or level, and keep my mud guards and not have any rubbing issues?

IRC, pretty much all of the FJ geometry is the same as ours right? His FJ looked bone stock as far as I could tell, unless FJ's don't come with 285/85/16's stock?

I want to do some type of level or small lift, but don't have the time or resources to get this done right now. Also don't want to drive around on stock size PreRunner doughnuts, with a lift or level (That just look terrible)

It should only be 265/75/16's or 285/75/16's, no such thing as the above.

285's will not fit without serious rubbing on a stock truck. Use the search function to learn more.

I rub with 285/75/16 with a 3 inch lift even after doing some trimming

Good to know fella's, I tried a search, but very few threads or info specific to 16" stock wheels. Seems as if guys run stock wheels, they more people do the 17" Sport wheels.

*Edit* yeah, FJ could have had 285/75/16 tires, it was in front of a crowded coffee house, so all I could get was a quick glance. But definitely was "285" width. Why would this size fit a bone stock FJ and not bone stock Tacoma without rubbing? I thought the FJ chassis was essentially the same as a reg cab Tacoma 4x4/ PreRunner 6-lug?

Too many unknowns in your original post, especially since you couldn't snap a pic or talk to the owner.

I know right, it was awkward. I didn't want to snap a pic, or look too long at it in case the owner was a douche about it. Crazy world we live in today if you follow me. I'm pretty sure it was 285/75/16. Stock FJ Mate black trail teams wheels. Tires didn't look overly huge, but more meat than what's stock on a TRD-OR.

What is the max tire size that will fit a stock Tacoma 6/Lugger, no lift, leaving oe mud guards on. I want no rubs. Everything I've seen points to stock OR size 265/65/16? Unless I'm wrong?

    Thanks in advance.

    265/75/16 will fit fine

255/85/16 will fit with a minor lift-tallest tire you are going to get without trimming fenders

Some people say that a 235 85 16 will fit with no rubbing. It's a hair taller and narrower than the 265 75 16. Is it possible you really saw 235 85 16 on the fj.

Man what's weird, I put plus 2 size tires BFG, AT's on my old '08 Nissan Frontier 4x4 Crew Cab with no lift, all stock. No rub or trimming anywhere, truck rode nice like that too. I will dig up a pic.

Suprised I can't do same with a 2nd gen Tacoma. Seems like a Tacoma has more room in the fenders than a Frontier. More ground clearance as well.

could be a UCA, rim backspace, or other measurement thats different between the two. Besides, are u sure the taco have more room, or do the flares just make it LOOK larger from the outside?

The 285 is an issue due to rubbing on the UCA as well as chewing the fenders if the truck is off camber with no lift.

Hell, even my 255/85/16s rub the UCA a little bit when I am turning.

Also, it could be that the frontier came with really small tires stock.. my Tacoma came with 245/75/16 tires so plus 2 wide would "technically" put you at 265, especially to a tire guy that doesn't really know what he is doing lol.

Put on a mild lift and then worry about tires. At least, that is what I did. I rode 2.5 inches over stock for a few months before I coughed up the money for larger tires.

This was +2 size on my old Frontier, with no lift or level. Worked perfectly, loved the look actually. Was hoping to do the same for my Tacoma. Hated that truck otherwise though : )

You can get 285's on a FJ with a cab mount cut and spacers or new wheels, that's whats on a my friends FJ.

Some say, his heart ticks like a clock instead of beating and that he can fit 33's on his Hilux without a lift or rub.

All we know, is his name is The Stig.
