So I'm planning to tear down the engine and replace these as its failing and getting worse.

Trucks sitting at 170k so while its apart what else should I check/replace.

Any tips or helpful insights from anyone else who's done this only found a few threads on here.

Also I've just started looking for parts and not real familiar with brands so any recomdations would be nice. It seems they bundle everything, so I'm trying to make sure everything is ready to roll as soon as I start to keep the downtime to a minimum. I'm expecting 4 days start to finish for me.

No offense but if you have to ask, perhaps you should be seeking assistance with this job. It's not exactly a simple job, and i would feel terrible for you if you spent all that time and money to realize you missed something and ruin your engine.

But, youll need valve stem seals that dont come in the kit, look closely at your main belt and replace if you see cracking, make sure all your belt wheels spin properly and replace the ones that are bad, new spark plugs (maybe coils too), new cam chain and guides, be sure to get the heads cleaned, milled and pressure tested (they will put the valve stem seals in for you too), FOLLOW THE TORQUE SPECS EXACTLY, use lots of engine assembly grease, be super cautious to get the cam chain and timing set properly (the dots can be a little confusing), have a butane torch ready for the crank pulley bolt cuz that thing wont come out easy, make sure you check both exhaust manifolds to make sure the cats arent blown out, I think thats pretty much all the advice i can give ya.

Good luck and like i said, If you have a mechanic friend pay him a few hundred to watch over ya. Totally worth it.

Thanks for your concern. Apart and back together are easy, so just looking to see if anyone had done this recently, since things like the manual and actually process do seem to differ from my research such as dropping the oil pan and diff to remove the timing chain.

And as to stronger parts I doubt I'll keep the truck much longer since the frames rotted, but that will have to wait till the recall gets to this state.

I've done everything possible to this engine. You don't need to take the engine out or drop the diff or oil pans

Exactly Toyotas service manuals says you do Haynes and everyone who's done it says not needed.

I also did not have to pull engine, oil pan or diff. let the air out of the front tires and removed the hood, grille and headlights (headlights werent really necessary but i was getting new ones anyway).

Stuff a big rag in the oil pan after removing the timing chain cover so nothing falls in there, and youll be fine.

Can you make a write up with pics? It seems like a lot of people are having head gasket problems after 100k miles and may be it will help if they decide to do it themselves.

I have my engine out so it wouldn't help.
