I have been thinking about trading to an access cab V6 with tow package. My regular cab is a little light in what I am going to be hauling.

My truck, 2014 regular cab, automatic 4X4 with 3K. No scratches or dents. Still smells and looks new. Went to 2 different dealers but neither one had an access cab 4X4 in stock but could get one today. Sticker was 31K but they only wanted $13,500 and my truck. When we got home I went to true car prices. It said the new truck can be bought for a little over 26K. I understand they need to make money but I looked at used ones on the Internet and they are priced at 19-22k for very similar trucks. Have read where other people trade in trucks with 100K and are getting a similar price. Just does not sound like I am being offered a very good deal. Now my little truck will get trailer brake controller installed and will be a tow rig :)

mini antenna... I'm getting to it! Sheesh!
Think about it. They have to resell your truck at a profit. No dealer will EVER pay you what your truck is really worth.

If you want it's value sell it in your own.

The access cab was 31K. I paid 1K under sticker for my regular cab. We are going to see how it handles towing our tractor. If a good deal surfaces for an older full size truck I might jump on it.

Was in town today and stopped by a chevy dealer. Had a super nice 2012 3/4 ton regular cab 4X4. The full retail price according to nada guide is, $27300 and rough trade is $22800. Trading my Taco, it was odd. So after all the smoke cleared they said $1800 difference. After I declined they asked about buying it outright. Was offered 21K. I said I was going to keep it.

Both toyota dealers said the reason for such a low trade price on my truck was because its a regular cab and nobody wants them. Now the chevy dealer said the reason they would give so much for my truck was because its super popular and will only be on the lot a day or so.

Sell It on your own. Toyota is also the one that told me they would give me a better deal on a tacoma, after i bought my Tacoma from them

Put your truck in the "For Sale" section here, sell it, and buy what you want.
Some folks really want a RC 4x4...myself included.

I really hope I misread and you didn't actually pay $31k for a regular cab

Just my $0.02 but if you're hauling anywhere near what you would need a 3/4 ton truck for then your regular cab isn't going to cut it and would be dangerous to try.

Dealerships will rape you on trade-in value. If you want to get something else, sell it yourself.

Ha Ha this. I would never trade my vehicle in, all you're doing is paying them 1000's to sell your truck for you instead of doing it yourself. These days selling a taco is as easy as ordering coffee from starbucks.

    sell that thing yourself.

and that is why I got 2K over trade in value for my 07 AC..paid 14,500 out the door when I got it and they gave me 16,500 for it as a trade in towards my 2011 DCLB.

It all depends on your location, they know winter is around the corner and every one wants a reliable 4X4....funny part was this was at a jeep dealer and they admitted that a used Tacoma will sell faster than the rams and wranglers

Agreed...21k sounds like a strong offer for a Reg Cab.

True...I tried to trade in my 2006 Prerunner for my new 2014 TRD Sport. The dealer now uses "Black Book" (or maybe they have for a while...)

Anyway, they offered $3500 less than I expected. I left, went home, put it on CL and sold it in 7 minutes...Don't trade it, although someone mentioned selling to a dealer outright? Interesting.

Dealers attempt to offer you at or below wholesale value for your vehicle while stubbornly and arrogantly demanding retail or higher values for their solid waste excretions. I don't have time for that nonsense. I just email them telling them that NADA is what my credit union uses to determine value and if they want my business, that's what will define the transaction. Otherwise there's nothing more I care to hear from them.

That's my perspective on the situation.

The other option is to look at new dealerships and wait for a juicy trade to pop in. They usually have much more room to work with on those and you might get them to throw the Low Balling for Dummies book out and make an actual and viable deal.

I love to hang around the dealership and beat them up over the price. It's like a sport.

If you really want to flog them, get friendly with one that has a Manheim/OVE login they will either provide or look stuff up for you. When you find the truck you want, have your car dealer friend get on and locate similar vehicles and what they are being sold for. Then lowball the bejeezus out of them using your information. :D
