I'm attempting, with a lot of help, to put in a used engine into my 1995 Tacoma. The new engine has an inlet for the cam shaft position censor on the side of the head, my truck didn't have this. What do I do? I thought about machining a cover and sealing the hole but don't know if this would eliminate my problems. How did the old engine sense the position of the cam shaft, through the distributor?

On the engine where the oil dip stick enters the engine, there is a cylindrical piece that's on my old engine but not the new. It doesn't look like it's part of the cast engine and I'm thinking it can be removed and put on the new engine. Can this be removed and what's the best way to do it?

Any ideas on what I need to do would be very appreciated!

    Thanks!

Yes to this. '97 and earlier 2.7s with a distributor had the cam position sensor in the distributor.

From most of what I've read, the motors from the different eras are not exactly interchangeable without also swapping many of the other parts, especially the ECU.

When I bought a new aftermarket head for my rebuild, it had two extra holes that my old 95 head did not. This is because the manufacture made the head to fit more than one application. It did come with covers to seal the unused holes. They were the same as freeze plugs. Shouldn't be too hard to find one to fit if you mic the ID of the hole.
