I have a 2006 Tacoma that I bought a few years ago. It's under body and frame look similar to this guys:

I was told by my local independent mechanic that it is approaching failure of the annual State safety inspection. I live in Northern NE, and I also live on a hill that is heavily salted. It's sort of a double whammy but I am not ready to move... yet.

I have made an appointment with the local dealer to document and advise. I am not hopeful of any good news, and apparently the rumors of recalls are mythic, not real, for this model year.

I'll see how this plays out with the dealer, but I am approaching the time when I might make a trade for reasons other than this. My question, really, is that : if I buy new, what is the best possible way for me to combat undercarriage rust?

I should add that I do not own a lift, nor do I have access to one... so poking around under the frame, myself, is not a viable solution.

if it looks like that, you really are not getting close to failing inspection, that frame will go a long time before it gets holes.

I treated my frame without a lift, you can take each wheel off and work around if you do not have jack stands. But if it were me, I would knock the rust off with whatever you have (wire brush, or if you have access to air compressor and tools a rotary brush or needle scaler), hit it with rust reverter, or other similar rust converting paint, then undercoat the shit out of it. I have used Fluid Film with good results, this year I am doign a mix of FF, paraffin wax and mineral spirits. If you get a new truck, treat it ASAP and continue to do so every fall

So I realize this is an old post, did the dealer ever do anything for you? I have an 06 tacoma that has a frame that kind of looks like the one you are referencing to and mine has also had the undercoating from the dealer. I am planning on running my truck this winter then make an appointment next year with the dealer.
