I know nothing about quality, craftsmanship or just knives/cutlery in general. I am looking for a nice set of cutlery to give as a gift. The biggest knives used are paring knife, bread knife, Chef's knife and steak knives. A block and perhaps a sharpening stone would be nice as well. Price I wanna spend is about $100 to $150 max. Thanks.

The exec chef and his assistant in the kitchen i work at both use Messermeister. A quick search shows a 9 peice set for $400.

I'm guessing you don't want that.

My buddies dad from work does a lot of cooking and has recommended Henckles.

    I am a chef....

I use forschner knives, they hold a edge for a long time and take abuse! Also very balanced and light.
