2013 4x4 4cylinder base off road?

How so ? I just got a 2013 4cyl with the auto and I haven't taken it off road yet so I am curious.

My previous 4cyl was a 5spd and I say with certainty that it was VERY capable off road so I am eager to compare it to the automatic.

 

My auto does just fine.

 

4cyl 5spd here with sliders and just added 265/75R16 bfg e rated hasn't even affected my fuel millage, only time I got stuck was cause I was stupid and fell in a hole

 

I've never been in a 4cyl Tacoma, but have had a few 4 cylinder Troopers in the past. Those things had plenty of power for getting around and even towed a 2800 lb. boat with little issue. I had to work the parking brake and rev the engine before pulling out of the water, but it worked just fine.

I vote for the 4 cylinder as long as you aren't towing anything heavy for long distances. Or need the 4 doors.

 

I just bought a 2014 base model access cab 4 banger 4x4 with the 4 spd auto. The thing is perfect for what I do, a 60/40 mix of hwy city driving. I tow a 16 foot aluminum with a 20 hp outboard and camping gear the dog and girl slow and steady. Off road in low 4 it's a freaking animal, the 4.10s are good enough. Running this rig totally stock. Thinking about some new tires but want to keep similar size maybe just more agressive tread. Only time I wish I had the v6 is with a full load on the hwy going up hill, but the lack of power keeps the speeding tickets away!
