My truck was in serious need of a rear bumper. The stock one was beat to hell by the previous owner. It was saggy and dented and chrome and most importantly, ugly. Decided I could build one myself easy enough. I built it at my father's place because his shop is air conditioned and well lit, much unlike mine.

Because I'm a nerd I sketched this design up in CAD.

And because I don't like surprises I brought in a slightly modified photo I stole from Box Rocket for a virtual mock up.

Crammed (not really) my truck into my father's shop. This shop is his hobby. Not so much building things in the shop but building THE shop.

Dat sag. The frame is straight but the bumper is very not straight.

The raw materials. Well under $200 of stuff. 5" x 3" x 1/4" box and some 3" x 1/4" angle, and some misc flat stock which I didn't end up using.

    Good riddance!

Bumper mounts out of the angle.

Toyota sure made it easy for hillbillys to make bumpers.

    Mocking up my length.

Notched the front of the tube one inch for some recess.

Starting to look like a hillbilly bumper.

Through slots for the receiver and recovery points. Started boxing in the ends.

    Attacked it with filler wire.

Boxed the driver's side of the bumper differently so I would could mount my CB antenna.

    Rattle can black of course.

I did basically this whole project with a 4.5" angle grinder, mig welder, t-square, and my imagination. It's not rocket surgery. Get out an build neat stuff for yourself.

    Thanks for watching.

Looks pretty clean. Where are you going to mount the plate?

I have it mounted to a plate which is welded to a piece of 2" box tube that is slid in the receiver. More pics later. Still gotta add a light and paint it.

    Look at build!
Looks great! I see your like me and considered the gap from between the bumper and tailgate and made up for it! I knew I wouldn't like a bumper and being able to see that gap! Simple and effective! Some wrap arounds would really finish it off! Only thing id recommend doing if you plan to tow anything with some weight is add some support from the end of the receiver back to the frame plates

Oh and super :jellydance: of that shop!!

Nice, similar to mine. I like how you did the CB antenna mount, clever.

Alrighty, got my license plate holder finished up. It is just a piece of plate welded to a piece of 2" box tube. It mounts in the receiver. I gave the plate a couple bends and stuck some LED strips on it. I used an SAE connector for the plate light wiring so I can take the plate off for wheeling, recoveries, towing, stealth, etc. Also got my CBI sliders painted and installed.

The plate doesn't look this crooked in real life. I swear.

Well, I have not weighed it, but I can lift and walk around with it by myself so it must be under 100 lbs. :)

Definitely NOT built in the back yard, or Texas as a matter of fact! I just called it back yard bumper build because I used nothing more than an angle head grinder and a welder really.

I did mine in backyard (literally). Was gona be based off his design but biggest metal i could get was 2x4. I liked the slim fit high clearance design anyways and later built a removable step.

Coulda swore i aready posted in this thread...

Looks good! It's almost funny how easy it is to make a good looking bumper for these trucks.

I found out this weekend that the bumper has really good departure clearance, but the license plate...not so much. I made it easily removable from the receiver, just forgot to take it off when we went wheeling. DOH!
