Well, I have the 5500 and was going to do this conversion..

    http://www.popandlock.net/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=160

But after reading of the problems, think I'll just stick with using the extra key ... not a big deal, and works great so far.

edit: Maybe the conversion would work fine since the lock is on the right side instead of the left side on the 5400

Just go with the electric kit, no key. I put one on my truck last weekend and it works great. If you're scared of being locked out, just keep a 9v battery and a weatherpack pigtail in the cab. The plug is easily accessible under the bumper if you need to pop it with a dead battery.

My second 5400 just failed. The first one seized and they sent me a replacement. Now the replacement doesn't lock. Key goes in cylinder turns but doesn't lock. Not sure yet if I'm going to try a third or go back to stock.

My first 5400 failed to lock after about 3 months of very light use. Haven't installed the replacement yet that the company sent me. If replacement is not any better, am planning to reinstall the stock handle and call it good.

Got my PL5500 installed this morning, took about 10 - 15 minutes... followed the instructions and everything progressed well until I got to the point where I had to set the mech before inserting into the tailgate slot. Once I got it in and everything snugged down, the lock did not want to work properly. I found that the Philips head screw needed to be snugged down more and that solved the problem.

This is in reference to a Pop & Lock PL5500 broken latch that will hopefully help someone with the same problem.

We purchased Pop&Lock, with backup camera capability, for our 2007 Tacoma. We have a Roll-X bed cover and could not access our truck bed when a plastic piece broke inside the handle's latch. We do not have a camera & if you have the camera installed, this idea may not work for you.

Here is what we did to temporarily repair the latch.

You will need to find a photo installation diagram from Pop&Lock PL5500 series which might be available on the manufacturers website. If you do not have the photo diagram, my instructions will not make any sense to you. Then refer to your installation diagram for your own vehicle to see if the latching system is similar.

We attached two long heavy duty cable ties to the big metal piece that the driver's side latch rod attaches to. It is located near the top of the tailgate. (Do not attach to the latch rod itself. ) Driver's side latch will be possibly painted red and is labeled #1 in the photo of the PL5500 installation instructions.

We then popped out the plastic piece for the backup camera and slid the cable tie ends through that hole. When the tailgate is in closed position we simply pull on the cable ties to open tailgate. Lock the tailgate, pull the cable ties, the gate will remain locked and will not open.

It is not pretty, but we salvaged our investment in the lock and no one can access our truck bed.

Glad you got in without doing damage. I still wouldn't touch those things again, I'm in the bed to often to be dicking around with a broken lock.

shit, I didn't realize how much of a problem the lock had. I can't find anything else out there with comparable features. I want to get a reverse camera for my 05 tacoma so my wife can drive it plus with lock but I guess I will hold off till something worth buying comes along. For $239 it better work.

The kit I was looking at was this:
