I did search before anyone asks and just got posts about how people love their go pro's. I love them too. But.....

I like spending money on truck parts and other things as well. After a few days of searching around I have seen there are quite a few Action camera alternatives and was curious if anyone here uses something other than a go pro.

The reason I ask is I want a camera that I can attach to my truck when I go off road and if it breaks I am not pissed that 400.00 just got destroyed. And not only that but go pro's seem to have their fair share of malfunctions and if i'm paying that much for something and the battery is having to be swapped out on one trail then i'm not too happy. Or the video is corrupt or what have you. The last two wheeling trips I have been on someone go pro go screwed up somehow to nothing was captured.

So what are you using. Model, specs if you have them would be great.

i've used gopro's on my track bikes and they've done fine with a little electrical tape to hold the SD card firmly in its slot. top speed: 172 mph with no issues.

I have decided on the garmin virb elite.

It's definitely a cycling orientated camera, but with all the extra features it comes with, it should have good other applications as well.

Two things I like about it is that it tracks your route with gps and has an accelerometer

...so if I ever get pulled over and the officer says I was doing speed X and I know I was not speeding or I was doing that speed before a reduced speed zone/sign.....You have the proof right there :D

Dash cams should not be used just to catch a crash ;)

There are tons of other actions sports camera's out there. Sony, etc makes them now. As far as spending $400, if you're just gonna use it for off road wheeling, you only need a basic model GoPro (White, or Silver edition) would be more than enough for you. You can find a used one for $150-200 easy if you do your research. One reason i use GoPro is because it is very, very, durable and customer support. The case can take a beating and your camera will be just fine. I've lost mine off the top of my riding helmet on my rocket going 80mph+ on blacktop. The case was pretty much destroyed but the camera was absolutely fine. GoPro replaced the skeleton case for me and i was good to go. Just my .02

Well I got a good deal on a used ion air pro on ebay. Everyone that was selling their used go pros either wanted more than retail or I couldn't justify paying 175.00 or 200 for a hero 1. We will see how things go with this ion. But if someone on tw wanted to sell me a used gopro for a decent price then let me know. I'd like to try one.

I've used a contour a handful of times...mounted it on a rifle for a couple course

It did fine, and seemed a bit less "bulky" hanging off the rifle, but ultimately I like having the external replaceable cases and 450939053 mounting options with my gopro

That's what I like about the go pro is the mounting options and of course the quality. But the whole battery dead and what not. I found put online the cases and mounts and stuff are not expensive at all. Where as this ion is really limited for stuff made just for it. I know it has the tripod adapter that would work with most go pro stuff. Idk I'll post a review once I get it and have used it once or twice. I may end up with a permanent dash cam if nothing else and the. Find a go pro.

I bought 2 wasabi power batteries on top of the 1 gopro battery it came with...I do occasionally have to change out the battery, but I also run mine on the highest quality video all the time and use the wifi a bunch too

I don't know if other cameras have the option, but I like being able to pull up my camera via smartphone regardless of where I am, and frame the shot

How much battery life do you normally have? I am fine with changing out batteries after a trail run before another trail run because all the meets I've been to we took a break before starting another trail. But one trail was about 1-2 hours.
