RO/DI systems are a huge waste of water and are extremely slow. You waste 4 gallons of water to produce 1 gallon of filtered. That looks like 90GPD setup, which means in 24 hours, you will waste 270 gallons to produce 90, which is about 3.75 gallons an hour.

Source: Used to run a salt water fish tank and mixed my own salt water out of RO/DI.

EDIT: Btw, only RO water is drinkable. RO/DI is not.

I'm also quite familiar with the waste as I also ran a saltwater Reef tank for many years , not only is it a waste it's not doing you much good. There are no minerals in the water to supply your body and teeth. When I was in the Navy we had distiller water on the ship, (no minerals) and we're told to supplement it with other drink .... I guess that's why "Bug Juice" was always available ? So I was told ....
I really wish I could have all the $$$$ that was Sunk into a successful reef/fish tank !!
Tacos are cheap compared to that !! Lol !!
Anyway .... Good luck , with whatever you do , I'm a gonna keep watching ...
My only suggestion would be to find a nice spot to sit down , relax , and enjoy a refreshing cup of Bug Juice !!! It's Good !!
Whilst sipping this Fine concoction , contemplate the Pros and Cons .....
    Bug Juice ...... RO ...... RO ..... Bug Juice .... ???

Lol .... No Harm ... I'm just enjoying this Thread and having some fun at the same time ! Wish I was there to help .... I was a Steamfitter/Pipe-Fitter/Welder/HVAC Tech/Controls tech/electrician/Professional from a 100 miles awayLadies man / Gentleman /and sometimes a complete Fuck-Up ( depending on the condition of my brain that day) or the circumstances ...and all around DIY er !

Here's my current filtration setup, hanging off the side of my popup, but can be hung anywhere high enough. I fill the square, blue 5-gal jug from whatever water source is available. Transfer it via the blue pitcher into the filter bucket, gravity-feeds through the filter into the white 5-gal jug. I can run stuff out of any nastyass cowflop-filled mudhole and end up with clean drinking water. Runs approx 2.5 gal/hour so takes 2 hours for a full blue/white transfer-

Bob, this looks good. I recall you stating that this is the "Life straw" filter. Is yours the family version? How do you like it?

Personally, I have a little electric pump that I use for my expedition hot water setup with the EcoTemp water heater. I just hook the pump up to a battery with alligator clips. So I would just drop the suction hose of the pump into the tank.

To get water from the other side? It looks like both openings of the tank are only on one side, so are you running a hose to the other side?

Yep, this is the Lifestraw Family 1.0. I've used it on two trips now and it's been great! First trip was 10 days providing drinking, cleaning and shower water for two people. Even though the water source was pretty good, I still filter the shower to prevent algae growth in the tank. Second trip was just me and my dog for 7 days earlier this month and it worked perfectly then as well.

It may seem like a hassle to have to keep filling the filter basket, but it's not that bad. It holds 1/2 gal at a time and I run it mainly in the evening when we're just hanging around camp anyway. The filter has a back-flush system built in which you work once a day which takes all of about 30 seconds to do.

SGTCap peaked my interest on this with his temporarily mounted Flojet and water jugs. I like the install done by truckwater.com. The Hidden tank in the passenger fender to help offset fuel, the fill cap in the bedside or cubby, and the output line in the cubby hole. I'd like to carry 5-10 gallons and keep this water clean and potable. Skygear, I will be asking you a few questions.

this is kinda related and a little outside the box, but anyone ever try using the exhaust system to heat and purify your water? my cousin owns united trucking and couple years ago he built the new home office in gulfport, ms to be totally self sustaining and eco friendly, solar powered, hydroponic grown food for employees, whole 9 yards, it is an AMAZING complex, if you passing on I-10 and have a minute, stop and ask if Louis is around, you want to see the innovations. he is so into that stuff he will stop and give you a tour, just set aside an hour he will talk your head off, lol!

back on point, the facility they use to wash and detail the big riggs uses A HUGE amount of water, but he wastes nothing!

the system he designed uses the heat used to super heat the water to clean the trucks to also heat the waste water into steam by running it back along the same heated line to be recollected and used again, then the small amount of contaminants collected and disposed off properly.

anyone ever tried to make like a sealed system with a sleeve on the exhaust to pass waste water through the sleeve around the exhaust to heat it enough to turn to steam and have a relief valve and collector to reuse the water? then you could also tap the system to get hot water for showers :) (also kinda like your grandads still in the woods, lol)

side note... why not just use like 3 or 4 windshield water sprayers and a little tank of water to make a little shower?

dont be too hard on me here, pumps and tubing aint really my thing, and i dont have much experience with taking showers and all in my truck, but reading the thread made me think of how he does it and thought maybe could spark an idea from one of you guys to use your tubing talents to sketch something up :)

if i am way off-base here then call me HOMER and DOH! LOL

Exhaust heating idea has been tossed around many times. That's the issue. No one has much experience with it. Just some cautionary advice has really been it on this board. Few friends have done it with wood burning stoves. That's really where my experience ends.

There are better ways to exchange heat using a vehicle than the exhaust. I know its been tried and the results were supposedly less than stellar. Using a heat exchanger and coolant t-ed off of the heater hoses seems to be the most successful route

What about setting up one of those tankless heating systems instead of the heat plate exchanger? Have any of you looked into that option. I was just thinking about it today and haven't looked into it yet re: issues such as power requirements, whether the unit itself gets too hot to say mount in the fender wells, how close/far must it be mounted from the water source to properly heat. But they are getting relatively cheap now a days...thought it might be an alternative option.

Let me know if any one has looked into this at all.

The problem I've seen with the ones I've looked at is that they run constantly wasting water. If I could find one that had a sprayer that recirculated water back to the tank when I'm not using it that would be great

Some new parts showed up. I'm sampling some cast stainless 316 fittings I found. Looks and feels great. More set to arrive later today.

30 plate. Surprised at how compact the thing is. I did Spencer's old skool flow meter test, and blew hard as I could, and hardly any resistance detected. Lol

Project should be completed in two weeks.
