Hi, my 2013 v6 prerunner tacoma with 20k miles shakes when I brake at speeds over 50 mph.
I took it to the mechanic and he re surfaced the front rotors, it did nothing after paying $70. I went to the dealer 2 weeks ago, they said let's resurface the rotors and install new brake pads as well, I said I just got the rotors resurfaced, they said I needed to install new pads and resurface them again because just the re surfacing was not going to do the job, he guaranteed it would fix the issue, I paid them $240 and it did not fix it.
I went back for a 2nd time, they said they checked the drums and were ok. It was still not fixed. I went back to the dealer a 3rd time, they test drove it, hit the emergency brake and noticed that the drums were the issue, they took em apart and cleaned them and said "I guarantee this time that it will be fixed", I drove off, and still shaking... At this point, I am frustrated, I don't think the shoes need replacement at 20k miles, what do you guys think can be causing the shaking? I am positive the issue is in the rear brakes because my steering wheel does not shake when I brake, it actually shakes underneath the truck and I can feel it coming from the back. What do you guys recommend? Thank you.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Try tightening the rear leaf spring U-bolts to spec. Some people are finding they aren't tight at all.

    I have a few questions:

    1. It is a 2013 under a factory warranty. Why did you take it to an independent mechanic and not the dealer?

    2. He charged you 70 dollars for a rotor turning? Too much.

    3. Why did the dealer charge you and why did you pay for warranty work?

I have a suggestion. Take it back to the dealer and ask for your money back and explain to you why they are charging for a truck to be repaired when it is still under the 36 months 36K mile bumper to bumper warranty. None of that should cost you a dime.

    I smell tuna!

    Jimmy,
Bumper to bumper warranties exclude brakes, tires, and things of that sort.
I took it to a private mechanic first to see if they could solve the issue, since the dealer is obviously more expensive.
The dealer charged me for turning the front rotors and for new front brake pads.
They told me that bumper to bumper warranty would not cover for that.
Do you think I should get new drums and try that?

My rear brakes were squeaking during slow braking so I took it to the dealership and they said I had some glazing on the drums and charged me $175. Still had the squeaking. Took it to a different dealership and they couldn't figure it out either. Frustrated, I took it to a brake repair shop and they determined the brake shoes needed replacing so I had it done. Guess what? No more squeaking. Oh and the shaking during braking stopped as well.

Give replacing the shoes a try if you have already tried everything else.

I was having issues once with a drum being warped, but it would get worse after highway driving and it would heat up a little. The drum probably only had 10-15k miles on it, who knows what happened to it? I ended up replacing everything else before hand because I was so sure it wasnt the new drums. Fooled me for a while thats for sure!

It doesn't cover " Wear Items ". The vehicle shaking when the brakes are applied indicates something else is wrong.

No you shouldn't get new drums the dealer should repair the defective brakes on your truck at no charge to you.

I would go back and bring up the safety of your family and if you have a wreck due to the faulty brakes etc. ...

And no you probably did not need new pads at 20K.

You were screwed. You need to be angry.

are your wheels balanced and aligned? I hope you got your money back from the dealer when the brake replacement did not fix it..

Yes wheels are balanced and perfecctly aligned. No I did not get the money back.
Is there anything else that you guys think might cause the issue of shaking when I brake? I checked the "U" bolts and they are tight... I would hate to now pay for new drums and continue with the same issue...anything else you guys can think of? Thanks.
