Subbed for outcome... What you had before the shell is what I am currently running. I have been wanting to get a shell for my dog to ride in but want to be able to mount my bike (29er), my wifes bike and my sons. What we do now is use three rocky mounts attached to the bed rail as mentioned above.

I'm a road guy primarily, but ride big bikes. I was going to do a mid-rise cap on my new DCSB, but my wife vetoed it because she hates the look. So, it's eventually going to be a cab-high cap like the Leer 100xq.

Thus far, I've been using rocky mounts on the bed rail (with no cap) and can easily fit my road and mtb bikes (large 26" Spec Epic FS). My time-trial bike is a little tougher because of the protruding dork bars, but still fits.

I'm resigned to laying bikes flat (w/o fr wheels) once I have a cap. I probably could use my fork mounts bolted to 2x6, but I'd still have to remove the seatposts from my bikes so the frames perhaps could fit in upright, maybe. I typically travel with 2-3 bikes, and want to keep the bikes out of the elements. I don't mind stacking my bikes if they are protected with a handful of padded moving blankets.

BTW, the two golden retrievers get the back seat.

It gets worse with everyone moving to thru-axle. And my buddies with Lefty forks are just SOL.

Yea. Very sad! I bought my truck and went with DCSB was the worlds biggest mistake. I should of got the 6ft bed, so many times I need that extra length. I have a leer cap so I ended up with a hitch bike rack as stated above.

Well, here is what I have so far. Piece of 2x4 cut to fit, angled cut so it doesn't disrupt the compartments at all, painted black and wedged in there pretty good and tight. Mount is a Rocky Mount. I am debating whether I want to drill 2 bolts into this, 1 on each side to make it permanent.

Anyway you slice it I don't think there is any way to fit 2 bikes in the bed using any rack system that I know of, even if one of the bikes was a 26er. Kind of a bummer. Not sure I want to make this permanent or not....

I learned the other day, turn you handle bars 180 degrees so it's facing inward to seat, if the brake lines allow. That will give you another 2in or so of shorten length of bike which is a lot when fitting a bike into the under bed cap.
