Any idea where I would find the new eye you posted?

The Warn setup looks a little more stout. I'll consider both

No worries. It sucks that that happened. Just trying to help you get it fixed.

I do just want to point out that these all say "Wire rope"

    1/4" rope:

I would suggest trying to get one like warn since the design is more, as you put it, stout and reliable. In the end it is really up to you. If you do decide to go with the eye I would also suggest not letting it out that far. Maybe put a marker on the rope to remind you when your extracting it.

Good plan. I'll order the warn kit. I wonder if an abrasion gaurd on the drum side of the line would help with heat

Took my new smittybilt x20 10k apart to clean all the old grease out and throw some better grease in. Went with Lucas Red and Tacky since I had some and that is what I use in my zerks.
Anything is better than what was in there I am sure.

Packed it fullllll. Prob 2 or 3 times more grease. Wasn't much in there.

Sgtcap. You can get the kids at home depot too.

I went with the warn rope due to the heat resistant cover they put on the end of the rope, drum side. Looks like you did have failure for to heat and being pulled while hot. As a rule of thumb, I do not go into the 'red' on the warn rope. That's a couple feet of backer.

You can see the the backer is orange from these guys.

And red with a loop from warn.

I prefer the loop over the lug. You could cut your line. Then make a loop with some insulated backer on it...

Something of note there though. From what I have observed, WARN is the only one weaving it into the rope and heat shrinking it too for added heat and abrasion resistance.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to look into this further. The loop definitely seems like a better way to go and the heat resistant cover is looking like a necessity. I never been thought I would have to use the winch as much as I did last weekend. This will give me a project to work on while I save for a new front diff.

    Lord I miss having a working 4x4

Interesting. It appears to be the exact same gear box as the XRC8. I regreased mine earlier this year. Used Mobil 28 Aviation grease. Since mine is not water proof I did not pack it full of grease but put a good amount in.

My next winch will be a COME UP winch. I have seen the way they are built and the insides of them. A work of art IMO.

yeah I am sure they are very similar if not the exact same inside the gears. This one is just rated higher for waterproofing and however I haven't seen the inside of the XRCs I honestly don't know what they have "added" to make it more waterproof. debating if I want to run a bead of silicon around it to make it more waterproof or if that would just end up making it worse if water does get it. The solenoid however is prob the same because no way that little box is waterproof. Think I might take it out and put it in some type of waterproof box when I relocate it.

Come up, I just googled it..interesting I never heard of this brand when looking into winches over the past month
damn reading the description these things sound bad ass. I would have jumped on this!

What they won't sell you a replacement? The wiring is pretty simple. Or are you wanting to rebuild one?

Yours looks like mine did after just a couple uses, except that last foot or so. It looks like that part slipped and caused some extra wear/scoring/heat on the end of it as it pulled off the drum. You must have just pulled out enough that the friction couldn't hold it on the drum anymore would be my guess.

I cut my lug off and just taped my rope on with electrical tape, cause the lug was interfering with the rope under tension. I've used it down to just 3 of 4 wraps on the drum and it held on fine.

Is your drum too smooth causing the rope to slip? A little sand paper may be all you need.

    Looks fine..

It's normal for Amsteel, or any Dyneema based UHMWPE rope (line) to compress and get a slight glaze after usage. If you grab either side of the compressed area, and work to expand the line again it should regain it's shape.

Definitely wouldn't recommend taking sandpaper to your winch drum. Rough surfaces are the death of any synthetic rope.

Not a huge fan of the wire lug termination, seems to me that it puts an un-needed chafe spot on the winch

    You can seal any winch.

Just need a place for the hot gasses to go.... like a breather.

Master pull recommends sanding it so take their word for it if not mine:

Gotchya.. Makes sense now, I thought your post was telling him to sand a new winch drum so the rope could grip it.

Yes. For sure, if you're drum has nicks or burrs from wire rope, it's imperative to sand and or condition/buff them out.

Sidenote.. Emil (owner of Masterpull) is an acquaintance of mine. I'll work a few days a week there when I'm home and bored... They do some amazing stuff!
