I'm looking for a complete overhaul/repair manual for the 3RZFE in my '96 Tacoma. I'm planning to do the work myself but would prefer to have the service manual. There seem to be a bunch of bogus download sites. I just spent $10 at Tradebit for a worthless manual. Any help?

Thanks Rick. Guess I did see this one earlier but will work. Any ideas about performance mods to include at overhaul?

I'm not an expert at doing performance mods, so not a good resource.
In the old pre-computer days, there was a lot one could do, but not so much anymore and still keep it all street legal.

Not much you can do to the internals to make it better. I've heard that you can get a kit to eliminate the balance shaft and chain. This, theoretically, will reduce the load on the engine, but it may run less smoothly.

The oil-based filters are popular, but I don't recommend it, since they tend to gum up the MAF sensor ( IMHO :) ) .

Headers can give some performance improvements, but they would have to bolt up to your specific rig, including the EGR tube. You'll have to do some research on this site, and others.

Some aftermarket stuff is 'snake oil'. Works for some, but not everyone.

Got the service manual. Now I'm looking for a mentor. I've overhauled aircraft engines but never one of these. Anyone overhauled a 3rzfe? Reason for overhaul: small loss of power and leakdown of nearly 50% on compression test. It's the rings. Got new exhaust valves @ 100,000 because I overworked it. Now have 185,000.

I've torn the whole thing down and almost everything is within specs. I'm putting in new rings anyway. The problem appears to be due to mis-timed valves when the new ones were installed. I've been driving it that way for 85K! The whole intake man. is covered in black sludge that reaches clear up to the throttle body. I guess if I had checked the valve adjustment every 30K like recommended I would have caught this.
