This may have been covered before but just wanted to show a spot i just found on my 2012 that would just be a matter of time before it started rusting. I bought a Tacoma to get me through the bush and to fishing spots off the beaten path but i also love cleaning it and trying to keep it as nice as possible. The spot i found today made me cringe, as it was jam packed full of leaves and wet mud. If it wasnt for a leaf sticking out of it i wouldnt have even noticed it. Just a heads up for anyone to prevent rust.

If you lift the rubber flap that is there you will see where im talking about, mine were filled with crap on both sides of the truck

Nice find OP.....checked mine and they were also full of debris. Used some big, flexible zip ties to loosen everything up enough to vacuum with crevice tool....then used a hose to blast out the rest through the weep hole.

I sprayed that area liberally with fluid film when the truck was brand new....this reminds me to check & reapply.

I clean mine out often too. I usually use my small electric pressure washer when washing the truck, angled just right so any backsplash doesn't go into the cab.

keep it wiped out when ever you clean out your interior...should help. I would also take through a touch less car wash with the under sprayer to help keep salt and grime off also

The previous owner of my X either lived in a pine forest (in southern california) or offroaded it (not really good for a lowered sport truck).

It had a couple of pounds of pine needles and random leaves, twigs and berries in there. First thought was rats but no poop of chewed up stuff/nest to be found.

Did the same thing to remove (zip tie and vac).

Everybody should check this spot, if mud and debris gets in there and blocks up drain holes, your truck will rust at that spot.

I thought the same thing at first, that mice had made a nest in there! It sure looked like that, So glad that wasn't the case. The pic above was after i had already cleaned all the loose stuff out. I still can't believe that i had somewhere that went unnoticed for the 2 years ive had the truck.

Yep bad spot for collecting leaves etc, I believe it makes it's way down thru the cowl vent area, which is another area everyone should check.. Bad design on Toyota's part.. I've been thinking of doing a mod, maybe put some sort of screen underneath the cowl grill area.

Agree that it is a bad design.

I pulled my 86 4x4 completely apart when starting the build. There was a couple of small twigs and some spider webs in the same area.

28 years and 280,000 miles and that is all that made it into that spot. And I used to offroad the crap out of it.

Why don't you just clean it out through the little access hatch each time you wash your rig ?
