i have posted before i have been having a really soft brake pedal lately. checked front and rear breaks, all well within spec almost new condition. traced every line for crimps or leaks, found none. check fluid every couple days, stays exact same level. i started thinking maybe vacuum problem?

frustrated and just playing around today i though maybe this thing has something to do with the vacuum system?

it was screwed closed. i opened it some and took off to the store...

pedal is now hard like normal again? is this just dumb luck or does this thing have anything to do with vacuum? and should it be open or closed?

    thanks guys

Thats used for checking the EVAP system. Has nothing to do with your brakes.

It's an access port for the EVAP system used for testing purposes only.

There is no good way to test it. If you are losing pedal pressure and it is coming back. Most of the time that is indicative of a master cylinder main seal failing to retain pressure. The fact it is sometimes holding pressure would indicate to me that the seal is sometimes holding up to pressure.

With the vehicle off, you may want to pump the brakes. Because it isolates the master cylinder alone. If it holds after pumping, that would indicate that the seal is momentarily holding pressure.

How many miles on vehicle and did you do the brakes yourself?

If you did the brakes yourself and cracked open the bleeder screws on the calipers you may have gotten unwanted air into the system as well. You may want to start by checking the lines for air. That will require two people to do the job however.
