What is the reason behind the 3" front lift limit on 4x4 Tacos? I have 880s, 5100s and Camburg UCAs, and to get rid of a rake I have with a 1.5" rear AAL, it looks like I need to go to the third perch on the 5100, putting me at a little over 3". Are my CV boots going to fail? CV joints/axle themselves?

I found a good write-up on simply stretching the boots to save them, if its a joint issue, I suppose a diff drop isn't enough? Might have to stick with just the 2nd perch and maybe a small spacer to keep it under 3"?

Its on 2wd as well, but more so for 4wd because you're severely changing the angle of the CV axle. They weren't designed for that much angle so you wear them out faster. Same goes for everything else like the driveshaft. Just a general thing really.

Hmm, I think I'll shoot for a little over 3" then, and get a diff drop and brace for future repairs- might as well be accustomed to it because when these 5100s give out, its Midtravel for sure.

    enough to go over stuff
You can go over three but even running around a 3.5 you will be ripping boots constantly. So just be prepaired for it.

There is a boot mod for this here.

But the more I read about CV angle, the more I don't want to go over 3", and looks like the more recent opinion on diff drops is that they don't work and only increase the chances of your diff getting caught up in something.

Guess I could have avoided an AAL in the rear- maybe I should run around with some weight to try and settle it some more.

Maybe do a 3 inch lift with a 1 inch body lift.

Valid concern for me. The 5100s are advertised for not having a lot of down travel to avoid damaging suspension parts (like UCAs). That said I'd be really curious to see an un-installed 5100 and OEM shock and see what ranges we are dealing with here.

I suppose I should just go with the second perch and live with it (factory rake), vs bringing a bunch of problems along by going over 3"

Well then this will be another concern, with IFS anything over 3" is going to put you out of specs for alignment & with 4x its already taxing the CV's due to angle at 3" pretty much anything over that you're going to have CV issues i.e; torn boots, premature wearing out of the tripod/tulip joint inside boots
