I am looking to buy a tacoma.
    I live in upstate NY.
Should I try to get the trd sport or off road, or is the stock 2008 non trd good enough for most snowstorms and some off roading.

It does not have lsd, as far as I can tell the stock sr5 has an open differential.
    (which does worry me)
But I have no expereince with 4wd or pickup trucks.
    Thanks,
    B

    It depends.

my first 05 open diffed 4 cylinder pulling a land rover out of the snow.

2 open diff equipped trucks circa 1992 stuck in mud. My 84 toyota made it through around the side where that 82 is. With open diffs.

My 89 with open diffs in snow up over the plow blade. I got in it and plowed the driveway no problem.

So it all depends. For extreme off road use and deep mud where you could lift a wheel yes a locker makes all the difference in the world. But for driving in the snow and running some fire roads, no problem with an open diff.

Does a 2005 trd OR 6spd have an open diff until I lock it?
