Pushing the Limit

Hello Everyone,

I have a stock 2012 Toyota Tacoma with a 4 cylinder engine. I've been hauling a snowmobile around in the bed in the winter and its worked great, but now I'm thinking about getting a second sled. Each sled weighs 425lbs and the sled deck weighs 400lbs bring the total weight in the bed to 1250lbs. Will my truck be able to handle that much weight in the bed? And if so what improvements should I made to the suspension?

But, with gas, equipment, passenger - you're gonna be overloading and you might be happier using a trailer.

it will work, but you will not feel stable on the road. I have had 1500 lbs in my bed. Not recommended! You will be over that with the two sleds, gear, gas, passenger.

 

How will the 4 cylinder fair towing all of that weight?

 

It'll tow it with less trouble than trying to load it into the bed over the rear axle.

2500 lb trailer's not a big deal to the 4cyl tacoma - though it's definitely good to have a trailer with surge-brakes at that weight. But you might come in considerably less than that.

Given that your deck already weighs 400 lbs, a two snowmobile trailer isn't gonna weigh all that much more than that - it might only weigh 500, but it supports the weight on an extra axle.

You have a full size sled deck on your Toyota? Man, gotta hang over the sides quite a bit!

 

I towed my 2 place enclosed trailer with two porky Polaris 800's in there for thousands and thousands of miles with my old 2.7L. It'll be pinned on the hills, let me tell you, but it will get you there.

 

I currently have a lil wooden deck I that I built, width fits perfect and the track hangs about 30 inches off the back. Thanks for all the feedback everyone!
