just turn the lights off, then go out and look at the headlights.

There should be a DRL setting on the head light stalk/switch. It is the second setting. It will not be the headlights, but the amber markers.

Off is Off, DRL is DRL and parking/marker lights are just that. There has to be a way to turn the lights off completely.

'05 Tacoma does not have DRL's unless it is from Canada. But they should have automatic headlight off, when you leave them in the on position and turn the key off and open the door. I'm not sure what year that stopped and was attached to the key fob lock button two push.

some of this, a little of that
Yep, just remember to release the parking brake to get them to come on. If you start the truck they will not kick on until the parking brake is off.

Well that a good thing since you're not helping

On mine and his the light stalk gives you the option of headlights on, parking lights, or off. If it is in the parking light or off position you will get the DRL, provided they are enabled on the truck. At least that's how it works on my 2008

Make sure after you install them that you check your headlight housings every once in a while cause some owners were having issues with melting from the bulb being on full the whole time. I added factory DTRLs to my truck to but took them off shortly after just cause of this reason so just keep an eye out.

I also had aftermarket yellow bulbs so that might have been the issue too.

Why not do the mod that has your driving lights on when there is power to them, instead of only if the lights are on?
