So, I have a 2014 PreRunner and love it.
With previous vehicles I have purchased a valet key that will only open the door and then hidden a key with chip inside the car.
I went to get a key today and the guy said that if you try to use a non chip key in the ignition ( As a thief might do) that it locks up all the electronics. Certainly do NOT want to do that.
    Is this real or BS?
    Any help appreciated

I believe it just prevents the car from starting. It doesn't "lock" everything and certainly not permanently, it just won't allow the ignition electronics to function since there is no chip broadcasting to them.

Dealer told me my 2013 isn't chipped, so I could be wrong. They said my replacement key was cut on site.

What are you trying to accomplish here?

I see no use in a lock only key. and why would it be called a valet key if it only operated the door? A valet isn't going to push the truck to the parking lot....

    Sincerely,
    confused

I wouldn't mind a key that only opened the doors. With my old t100 I had a bunch of keys cut and I left one in the truck at all times so that when I went to a gas station to get a soda or run back in the house or something like that I could leave the engine running (especially in the winter when the heater is going) and I could still lock the doors with the engine running. One that wouldn't start the engine would be perfect because then if someone broke in to the truck and found that key at least they couldn't start it.

I will say this, if you have the wallet card with the key, I wouldn't put too much faith in it to open the door. I tried it, since it looked pretty feeble and sure enough, it twisted and cracked. So, word of warning if someone has that in their wallet thinking they have some back up in the event they lock themselves out. It will probably not get you into the truck, and if you're not careful, might even end up broken off in the key hole.

I had a plastic wallet key 16 years ago. Said "DOOR ONLY" but it worked fine for both door and ignition, which came in handy a few times. Truck sold 2 years ago and plastic key still worked great and no issues holding up. I'd love one for my Tacoma.

You might like one, like the one you had 16 years ago, but the one I got last year with my new Tacoma was flimsy junk, at best. Total waste of an ounce of plastic. It had some equally flimsy bit of tin for support.. but I would guess the plastic was actually stronger. Like I said, I tried it once, just to see if it would actually hold up and I may as well pinched it in a vice and twisted it. Massive fail.

I had a non-chipped key cut to keep in my wallet just in case I lock the chipped key in the truck when I am away from the house. I used a grinder to remove most of the excess metal on the head of the key so that it is as small as possible in the wallet. I never expect to have to use it, but, if it ever saves me from having to break a window to get in when I'm in the middle of nowhere, well, 'nuff said.

Thanks for all the responses. No idea why it is called a valet key. That was the term the guy used. I generally avoid valet service anyway!
Idea was similar to several posts. Have a door key on the outside of the truck and a chipped key inside in a discrete location. Second level of passive anti theft
    Thanks again

Valet key on the Tacoma is a key where the chip cannot by copied to create another key. Its the one with the grey cover on the key head.

btw, I to have a non-chipped key in my wallet, and have had to use it once or twice.
