I'm shopping for a Tacoma in the 10-year old range. The mileage of my current truck (Nissan V6 4x4) is really bad so I'm thinking I should really look for a 4 cylinder vehicle.

A four cyclinder 4x4 Tacoma is really hard to find here in Vancouver.

Is the gas consumption of the Toyota Tacoma V6 outrageously higher than a 4-banger?

Lots of threads on that subject. It appears to me to depend on driving habits. I drive like an old geezer and get much better mileage than most report for their V6s. Some report only slightly better mileage with the 4-bangers.

FWIW, I have had three Nissan V6s that got about 22mpg.

(FWIW, I have had three Nissan V6s that got about 22mpg)

I don't doubt it, but mine always sucked fuel, no matter how well I had it maintained and tuned. Frame is shot anyway, so it's gotta go.

My 2014 4wd 4 cyl has averaged 21.3 MPG in its first 10,000 miles but with the a/c on every mile and no extended hiway trips.

I average 22-24mpg 90% city 10% highway driving. I always have my windows opened though. I also don't drive very light footed, I live in Omaha and am constantly dodging dumb people usually texting on their phones. Unless you're doing a lot of towing or feel the need to go fast (idk why you'd want to driving a Tacoma...but to each their own), then the 4cyl is a better engine IMO.

If you're talking Vancouver BC they're rare, especially in 4x4, I have the only one that I know of, i get 20-25 mpg I'm also running sliders, and 5 e rated tires

It all depends on how you drive it and what you do to it. I can get 24mpg all day long if I stay off interstates, and can get 26 on extended trips if I work at it. If you can average a trip out to 55mph avoiding higher speeds you could probably get 28mpg. I have done it on shorter trips, but can never get optimal conditions over a whole tank. Something like a scan gauge or ultra gauge will help quite bit once they are calibrated.

Putting heavier tires will suck your mileage down more than anything imho. I run heavy all terrains for winter use and might try some lighter dedicated winter tires when these wear out. When the winter tires go on in the fall the mileage drops to 21-23 mpg, and in the middle of winter I'm usually at 19mpg. For this reason, and because it makes switching tires easier, I got a second set of wheels with stock tires on them. If I want good mileage I run the stockers. If the roads are going to be bad the winter tires go on.

I think three sets of tires/wheels are in my future. Dedicated winter, off road and highway tires/wheels.

Hope this wasn't too much info. I think about this quite a bit.
