So I'm at the point where I'm getting a little tired of the military and was looking into going to school for a medical degree. Even if I stay in it's still nice to have a fall back plan. Originally I have always wanted to do Radiology but with having a family now I can't afford to give up working full time in order to do clinicals, so I started looking at other degree options at a campus here and they offer Radiation Therapy and I am really interested in it since it pays well, seems to always be a need for radiation therapists, and it's a job that can almost be found in any part of the state (would be nice to get out of Vegas and back to the east coast since I have a daughter now and it would be safer). Anyone on here have any info on this degree program or is doing this for a living? Any more info or advice would be appreciated!

What's the point in having a career and jobs section then? Do you question people asking for gun advice in the guns and hunting section of this truck forum?

    Exactly, so why not?

Huge spectrum of people on TW and he's asking specifically about radiation therapy, and I would bet that there are some here on TW already in this field who can offer a good response to the OP.

Don't be a douche. Read before you post.

I don't know anything about radiation therapy, but I can agree that there will always be work for you. I work in the engineering and construction industry and during the recession we were hit really hard. My wife is a physical therapist and she just kept plugging along. People still get sick regardless of what the economy is doing. If you are set on radiation therapy as opposed to other medical careers, go for it.
    Good luck!

That's great and all and I appreciate the links but I was wondering if anyone on here does this for a living and had personal info to share

I hear ya. I work in the Reserves full time so when the furlough kicked off it hit me kinda hard so if I get out then I'd like to do something a bit more secure and I've always wanted to work in the medical field. Just wondering if anyone had any first hand experience with this field before I start school. I have some training that I'm doing right now with work so I wouldn't be enrolling into school until the summer most likely. Don't think I'd be done in time for spring classes

Thanks, man. That's what I would really like to do - relocate to a safer area, especially now that I have a daughter. I'd like to go back to the east coast where we'll be closer to family and nicer area's to live in. Plus, I miss living in the country. Growing up on an acre and now living in a house where my neighbors houses are 10 feet away sucks.

I completely agree! If I end up doing this and going to the east coast it would be a pretty good pay cut compared to out here but cost of living is more here so I know that plays a part in it. So what do you do exactly? Why do you say radiation therapy is depressing? Is it because you work mostly with cancer patients? I'm very interested in working some sort of radiology field, always have been. Radiology or sonography would definitely be a first choice but like I said I can't afford to not work and do the clinicals portion of those type of degrees

Honestly, that fact that the pay is high is just an added bonus for me. I feel like I'd enjoy anything in this career field. I'm gonna look more into what you do as well. I have time before I enroll in school so I have a lot of options to look at, radiation therapy is just something that caught my interest after I started looking into it more.

Woah, that's a lot of options. My biggest concern is having to do clinicals. Really isn't an option unfortunately cause we depend on my paychecks to supports ourselves and I can't take the time off from work for it. I looked into the radiation therapy program here and it doesn't list clinicals like it does for the other medical fields. Before I enroll I'll definitely be talking to an advisor to see what career options are available to me in this area of study. Thanks for all the info! This is more of what I was looking for when starting this post.

Yeah, that's what worries me. I'll just have to talk with an advisor and see what my options are and if I have to do clinicals then mabe I can work it to where I do them on the weekends and Fridays since I'm off on most Friday's or a few hours at night after work or something.

Oh definitely! I'm sure the end result will always be worth it if it's something you love doing and are good at it. That's where I want to be in the end. Right now I'm good at what I do I just don't enjoy it anymore. I want to be able to wake up and look forward to going to work again and if sacrificing a lot of time over the course of those 2 years is what it takes then so be it as long as my family and I can get what we want out of it in the end.

Just FYI, this Friday I'm going to talk to the admin at the health program offices at a school here to get an overview on their radiation therapy program. Hopefully they'll say what I want to hear and I can attend it. Just worried that my current job hours won't allow for it being a full time USAF reservist. If not then my last option is to see about going Army and if it's possible for me to cross over and do a form of radiology through them.
