    Hey TW,
My Tacoma's got 146K miles on it. I've had the truck for almost half a year now. Recently I was on the highway and started to smell clutch, it confused me as I had been in 5th gear for the past ten minutes. So I reached under my clutch with my foot to see if it was slightly depressed, and it was by about a centimeter. Now whenever I clutch in, I'll lift the clutch back up with my foot. The woman I bought the truck from said she had just replaced the clutch. (At a dealer mechanic I believe). Is this normal? It's possible I imagined the smell on the highway, but it got me thinking maybe the pedal needs a new spring? Any advice is helpful.
    Thanks-
    Jack

The smell of clutch is a little concerning.

But the clutch pedal not coming all the way back up could be two things:

    1. Hydraulic. Seems like your master cylinder might be shot

    or

    2. The spring is worn out. Highly unlikely but who knows. Is your truck a 4 cyl with the linear spring or 3.4 with the torsion spring?

Lastly, there is supposed to be a bit of free play at the top of the pedal when released. But it should always be at the top when "resting"

Thanks a lot to both of you, my clutch is squeaky as mentioned in the link posted. I'm glad I asked, definately will address this more pragmatically.
    Thanks

Also I do have the v6, would that make it more likely to be the spring?

The way you described your problem, I'm still leaning towards it being hydraulic issues. But a cheap and easy fix you'll really enjoy is to do the "linear clutch spring" mod. Make sure to buy a Toyota brake return spring for your application.

^One thing that happened with my clutch is that the horseshoe shaped pivot on the pedal actually wore enough metal off that the torsion spring wouldn't pull it all the way up. If that happens and you drive for a while, you might slip your clutch, creating your clutch smell. To fix it, I pulled it out and filled in the material that was removed with a mig welder.
