It's weird that so many 2nd Gens are rusting out as they do. Do people not wash off the undercarriage after a trip on a salty road? I have an '06 and while I don't live in the "rust belt" per se I have driven it over salted roads every winter and also, until a couple of years ago, used to drive it quite a bit on West Coast beaches. I wash the undercarriage off frequently though. Today, I got under there and did a through inspection and found only the slightest haze of rust in only a few areas. Maybe we use a different salt formulation in the Midwest but I'd say that ocean spray is still pretty rust-inducing.

I do wash it & last year I was religious about it bc I had a heated space to do it in. I've lived on the gulf coast, the east end of LI (surrounded by salt) the pacific & honestly upstate NY is constantly salted for nearly 6 months of the year. I wonder if the brine solution they spray on the roads makes thing worse?!

Svc rep said the frames that rot were dipped at an angle that allowed air pockets to form inside the frames & that's why they are rotting

I think it's not only road salt in the Northeast that's causing the vehicles to rust so badly but the acidity of the precipitation too. The acid rain map below looks it corresponds fairly well with the states for which the Tacoma has a frame rust recall.

Your chart date is 1996. I think this data may be out of date.

Note that this map uses slightly different colors.

Edit: A closer look shows a slight improvement between 1996 and 2010. For instance, many areas that were pH 4.4 are now pH 4.7. However, my previous hypothesis still stands as the areas where frame rust is more of a problem have both salted roads and lower pH precipitation.

Some places in New York were using fracking fluid which that came out of pa to keep the dust. Fluid which eat threw rocks you know it's gonna eat through your frame eventually?
