Just an update and some pics from my head gasket repair. I found I have a broken slider on my number one cam chain tensioner, so I'm waiting for parts. Otherwise reassembly has gone fine.

Here are pics of the teardown, number 6 cylinder showing where the leak was, the coolant deposits on the pistion, and the failed gasket. Also a couple from the reassembly.

I didn't drop the oil pan and the timing cover comes off no problem after removing the two studs at the bottom of the cover. Any questions, just ask. Happy to try and help. It's a lot of wrenching, but if you keep stuff organized, and follow the manual steps, it's really not that diffucult.

Nothing really other than the 10mm bi hex driver to get the head bolts out. Had to order that from snap on.

Did all the tests and everything came back fine. Replaced the plugs and they all looked fine. However, I did find out my water pump is seeping and am hoping that is my problem and not the head gasket. My sloshing in the dash only occurs at take off (from like a stop light) and never during normal driving (like when flooring it).

Going to replace it and see if that's the problem. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Your heater core drain hose isn't blocked is it? I'd suspect you'd start smelling nasty water or having wet carpets by now, but it should be easy to check. Just poke some sort of wire up the drain, maybe a coat hangar. Be gentle, it shouldn't take much force. Never done this on a taco, but had a similar issue on a VW once.

Just a quick update on my truck. I'm just over 500km after new gaskets, and all is as it should be. No more gurgles.

Jeremyk61, I'd pull a vacuum on the whole cooling system and see what happens. That is the only way mine would show an issue. It would leak more when it was hot, but cold or hot, was leaking for sure. Could hear air bubbling in the block, so guessed it had to be the gaskets, and it was.

Now I just need a new frame, and should be good for another few years ;)

I'll update in a few thousand more kms

    Thanks Kite for the help.

Would the water pump cause a vacuum issue like the gasket would? I saw where yours (water pump) was leaking too and it still didn't fix it. I don't know that I've heard gurgling in the block; mine sounds more like in the dash but I can't be certain. Was yours making the sound when you would floor it while driving? I don't get any noise when I do that, only at take offs.

    Thanks again for the help!

To clarify, mine only gurgles in the block when I had the cooling system vacuumed down checking for a leak.

The gurgle I would hear driving was in the heater core and only on startup, or takeoff from standstill. Sometimes with a heavy trailer on I would hear it when it downshifted under heavy load.

This is the only tool that showed any problem with my truck. All other tests showed fine.

A leak anywhere in the system could cause air in the system, but the trick is to figure out where the leak is.

Like you, I went through every possibility before tearing the motor down.

So you would bet on it still being the head gasket?

Head gasket for sure. You could see where it had been leaking on #6, and there were deposits on the piston. Also, the plug looked very slightly different compared to the others. Pull #6 plug and compare it to #1 and see if you notice a difference. If so, you probably need gaskets.

I don't recall (I replaced the plugs a couple days ago) which is 1 and which is 6 but do any look out of the ordinary?

Can't really tell from that picture. The only part that looked different on mine was where the electrode meets the insulator. Look at all 6 and see if one is any different than all the rest there. You'll have to look very closely at them in a light to see any difference.
