    I cannot offer much for the sudden decrease in mileage, other than what Chris suggested.
    The clunking when shifting into gear can be caused by several things. Excessive backlash between the ring and pinion gears, bad universal joints, or a Detroit Locker. The D/L has some slop in it by its design, and is rather noisy. You didn't say that you had one, I just thought I would throw that out there just in case.
