You can actually do this without turning the truck on.

 

I don't mean start it. I mean just click the key over to on to where the odo displays

 

Exactly.

Modern vehicles will display the mileage, and rotate through the trip counters, without the key in the ignition or turned on.

My wife's '04 Rav4 needs to be on to do that, but most vehicles from '05 or so and newer don't.
