Not quite the deal I got with my $200 taco thread, but still not bad. Unrelated but my $200 taco is now for sale, $4k.

I decided I need room for the kids and also a place to lay a rifle when I'm hunting so the standard cab isn't going to do the job I need.

2000 extended cab sr5 with the 2.7 and about 110k on the clock. The exterior is a 7-8/10 but the headlights are glazed and front bumper is dented, same with the interior except the PO was a serious smoker. I spent a couple hours shampooing last night and am airing it out with some big air cleaners today. Then a gallon of febreeze and hopefully I don't get black lung from being in it. PO also replaced the shifter knobs with wally world skull and 8ball knobs, which was irritating. But while cleaning I found both factory knobs so they're back in place. If anyone wants a skull, $3600 (+fees :) ) It has AC (yay) but no power anything and no cruise (boo). I'm guessing the SR5 package for 2000 consisted of the SR5 sticker.

I picked it up at auction for $3600+auction fees. I spoke with the local toyo dealer yesterday, they were unaware of the frame buy back (how in the hell are they completely unaware?) Anyways I went in later with the info and they will be inspecting the frame tomorrow. Even though it looks like a nice little ride, I'm hoping for a buy back. If it goes through I'll start buying every 2k truck I can find and they'll get tired of seeing me  At least until I either pay off my house or find a TRD v6 with an auto.

Assuming that in all likelihood I'll still own this truck on Friday, I'll be switching wheels/tires between the trucks. A little better tread design and a little extra ground clearance will be nice. After that... winch bumper, chop the bed...

Cool truck! Cruise control isn't hard to install, I installed an aftermarket system on my old T100 (1993) and it worked great. I couldn't live without cruise haha. Also, power windows don't look too hard to convert too. I was going to do that before I sold my truck, so I watched many videos on YouTube about it. As far as power locks, not sure, haha. I like your reg cab!

Me too, considering the initial inspection date is long past.

According to them(toyota) its 15 years since date of service, isnt restricted to the original owner etc. im guessing they (toyota) dont care if they get sued by the first guy or the 51st if the frame separates on the interstate. This truck has through at least sept 2015 before the window closes, not sure when the actual sales date was, so it might have a few months. My quick look, more surface rust than my other older vehicles but i havent spent more thana few seconds under it so far.

My best guess is it will be fine, but im rolling the dice :)

It needed to be initially inspected by the end of 2011 to be part of the deal. There are a lot of guys on here that don't qualify because of that rule.

Wasn't the frame inspection deadline just for the 01-04 guys? The 95.5-00 get bought back for 1.5 times the KBB value. Just going from memory (had a 99 bought back).

yes. the 15 years is the extent of the warranty for the frame, not when you can take it in.

the '00 might have been part of frame replace, I think i heard somewhere someone got one but most '99 and under were bought back if it was serious enough.

You cant get the frame replaced (01-04) or 1.5x value (95-00) unless it was checked and passed before the deadline a couple years ago.
Doesn't matter how many owners the truck has had, all that matters is if the frame was inspected before the deadline. If it passed the inspection you have 15 year warranty from the "in-service" date.

"in-service" meaning when the original owner drove it off the lot, not from date of inspection. I was confused at first about this too.

Ya, "in service" date means 1st purchase. A warranty is a warranty.

Anyway, interesting couple days. I spoke with the dealer he said he was unaware of the issue. He's 12, so not surprising. I found the actual dealer bulletin though and took it down, spoke with an older tech and he said "Yep, absolutely" and set up the appointment. So I took the truck down, yet another young tech was there, and again knew nothing about it. So I handed him the bulletin, he had a group conference with the other young techs (there are some long words  ) and eventually a guy who looks to be in his late 40's joined them and said "Oh yeah, all the first gens you're supposed to check for frame rust". I have good ears and they're talking in a concrete room so it's not hard to eavesdrop.

A couple minutes later the 1st guy walks back and says, "Is there a trailer harness on it?"

    Ummm, no.

"Well the only recall is for the trailer harness, if it had that we would look at it. But since it doesn't and there's no recall there's nothing we can do for you."

So now out of pure amusement regarding the 100% conflict between what I know they talked about and what I was told, I'm talking to Toyota.

This is starting to become fun.

Minor update. I emailed toyota directly with the above info, they emailed back asking for the vin, i got busy and ignored the whole thing for a while, like 3 months. But last week sent them the vin and had another email saying it was being transferred to a manager, got a call in less than a week.

So kevin says there is no recall, obviously, but its an extended warranty so it doesnt matter. There is no requirement for it to be the original owner, previously inspected, undercoated, blessed by a tibetan holy man etc. He says the rust out is generally only an issue with vehicles with certain parts of the country but the warranty is for all vehicles so he will be contacting the local dealer and give them the instructions on the frame inspection. Then direct them to contact me for an appointment.

All in all, not bad service.

For real? My research found that it absolutely had to be inspected per the campaign's guidelines. Geeze, get a different answer from everyone asked

No mention of either. They asked when I bought it and that was it. It's well within the 12 month window, this july IIRC. Personally, I'd buy every one I could find and hold it for a year if that were the case. a 500% turn around on an investment n only a year makes me happy. To put it the best way possible, if I made $1.05 on every dollar I spent, the only answer to "how much would you spend" is "Every dollar I can find."

A warranty is a warranty. A lawsuit from a truck that fell in half that was never inspected is a lot more expensive than fixing the problem. Since they have acknowledged the problem, and it covers the vehicle not the owner, failure to take action falls into the deep dark abyss of legal torts. It's not billy bobs fault that he died in a truck he bought last week just because billy ray never got the inspection done.

Poor billy bob, he dies in a lot of my stories
