When I back up and apply the brakes I hear a popping sound. Now i'm starting to hear the same sound when I put on the brakes when i'm rolling forward. Also I have a 4 cyl Tacoma (2012). What are some things I can do to make it faster and get more HP out of the engine?

Any and all help is appreciated.

That sound may be your rear brake adjusters doing it's job.

It could also be the front brake pads slapping against the rotor. The front pads on these trucks float in the caliper on pins. As they wear down you sometimes get a noise when you first hit the brake pedal. On my 2008, I replaced the pads, lubed the pins and the calipers where the pads slide and the noise went away. The sad thing is I still had over 50% pad life left.

I would check your drums and see if there is too much slack. You can brake a few times in reverse and see if the noise stops.

I've asked 2 toyota dealerships to check it out and they both have said it was the brakes adjusting and normal.

It's annoying cause it's really loud and happens almost every time I start a "sequence" of braking.

    Yeah.
As NAAC3TACO says, the pads float. When you back up and stop, they get pushed back in the caliper, then when you go forward and brake they get pushed forward. Not something I would worry too much about. On mine, it is not loud, but noticeable, and I really only notice it on the first braking when changing directions.

common noise on 2005 and up. my front brakes did this after a couple of thousand miles. never caused a problem, front brakes had 96k miles and would probably go another 20k. probably could remove the slide pins and lube. just the pads sliding back to keep from dragging too much.

There is a post that has a remedy for this problem... I believe you need an additional spring clip on each side. The spring clips keeps the brake pads from floating in the caliper. If you look at your calipers you can see the spring clip on the bottom slide of the caliper. You need to order a spring clip for the top slide on each caliper. Searching for the thread now.... found! see below.... post #28
