I've done it in the 5 toed shoes and regular cross training type shoes. I like the full shoe better despite the lighter weight of the vibram 5 toed shoe. Tread on a shoe, regardless of type, doesn't really help in mud. Running across open terrain doesn't require extra tread usually. Most of the obstacles either don't need that much extra traction because there are places to actually stand on or kick your feet into.

    Those damn girls get around!!

I did my first TM at the Portland location with Zach (Smar969905) in August of this year..signed up for Seattle the following month with their sale. Unfortunately, Zach couldn't join due to other priorities. Aiming for Vegas next year with the same folks I did Seattle event with.

    EDIT:
I do want to do Spartan Race (sprint) next year. Spartan looks physically challenging. I've done a few other 5k's..they're more fun than challenging.

Truth. Talking to a friend who did the trifecta this past year. Definitely on my list to do in 2015.

I signed up 2 years ago with almost a year to prepare. I didn't follow through and didn't bother going. I was filled with guilt about it. I ended up buying an open ticket for this year. It was going pretty much the same as last year. At the start of the summer I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic.

Because of the diabetes diagnosis I decided to diet and exercise in lieu of medication. I've lost over 20 pounds and my longest jog to date is 12 miles. So guess what? I assigned my open ticket to tough mudder philly on Oct.18!

I posted this 2 years ago. I guess I was heavier than I thought. I weighed 186lbs. at my last doctor's appointment 2 weeks ago. I jogged half marathon distance today without water or food during the run. It took me approximately 2 1/2 hours. But my training loop has a nice gradual hill in it. The loop is 1.2 miles, so I hit that hill 11 times today.

It's not that bad. I signed up back in 2012 a month out in Seattle without any training. Worse part for me was the electroshock...no thank you. Mind you, I'm not fit or obese, just an average dude. Doing it with a group of friends help for motivation. This race is all mental, nothing physical.

It's too late for me to train for strength and grip. If I start now I'll just end up sore and fatigued the day of. I was at Dick's the other day and picked up Nike Alpha Grip. Sort of a gimmicky thing I thought I might try. I have heard about cut off mad grip gloves and might pick those up. The event is 2 weeks away and I am pretty excited. My brother did it 3 years ago with his brother-in-law. I will be on my own to start which doesn't bother me at all. I like the challenge and I mostly enjoy doing things solo. it was always individual sports for me. Tennis, cycling, golf, and now running. With cycling and running it's at least an hour by myself and I like it. I'm up to 2 hours running a loop and I like it.

Don't wear gloves. Your hands give the best grip on metal if you can wipe them in grass first. As long as they are dry/semi dry you will have amazing grip on any bar obstacles. I saw countless people drop on bars because their gloves were wet and slippery.

Doing a savage race this weekend with my wife, like a tough mudder but shorter and MUCH cheaper. Always a good time though. Only obstacle race I've done where the obstacles compare with the tough mudders.

Thanks for the tip! What about wall edges and such! I get that they're not needed for bars and such, but I thought they might help on walls.

Just purchased spectator tix and parking for my family. Still gotta get compression shirt and shorts and tech shirt and shorts. Also tech socks. Gonna run in my old asics. Everyone on course by 10am on sunday, so it'll probably be in the low 40's to start. Think I should buy long sleeve?

I'm running in long sleeve, but who knows how much it will help with the water obstacles. Might just get soaking wet and more cold haha

I finished! I finished my first tough mudder! It was a good time. And it was great to have my wife and children there to cheer me on. My aerobic conditioning was very good. I pretty much jogged the whole thing even with the hills (I did walk a little but felt I could've jogged the whole course). Strength and grip were my weakness. Overall distance covered was just over 10 miles. I finished in 3 hours. Truth be told I can't really swim, so I bypassed the swing. Also the 2nd set of mud mile pits; I bypassed those too. Yeah. I probably cheated between 30 and 45 minutes off of my time. After 2 runs up Everest I went around. I DID do the arctic enema. I am pretty pleased with how I did, but know I could do better with more training.
