ok here is what I got

1999 sr5 ext cab 2wd with 2.4L engine and auto tranny regular light weight suspension with 5 lug 14" tires

the intake is on drivers side and exhaust is on passenger side, I mentioned this because I see on some year models it is reversed.

youtube says the fuel filter is on the frame rail under drivers seat but that must be just for the 6 cylinders because I went under there and its just smooth straight uninterrupted fuel lines from the firewall to the gas tank.

I looked around under the hood but its crowded and my eyesight isn't the best but I cant see a fuel filter anywhere. I must have one right?

I am 98% certain everything is bone stock on this thing as the original owner was a grampa and everything I see he changed was with OEM parts, most likely dealer serviced its whole life.

I do see what looks to be some sort of can up under the intake manifold but I cant believe I have to take the engine apart to replace a fuel filter.

its got 120k miles so I want to put a new filter on it if I can so can someone help me?

    thanks

if its the same as the 2.7l then yes its up under the intake manifold on the side of the block. I don't know how much room you have being a 2 wheel drive, but on 4x4s you can pull the front tire off and access it through the fender well.

thanks, maybe if I had it up on a car lift I could figure it out but my truck sits like a car so the fender well thing is no dice, I might be able to touch it but that's about it and I cant take it off one handed so it looks like I have to pull everything off of the engine to change it then.

if it ever "has to be changed" im deleting it for sure and put a generic one somewhere else that makes more sense. just don't understand why they didn't leave it under the drivers seat where its accessible?

Can I get an Amen? Under the manifold is a serious PITA to get to. I know some on here pull the plenum and all to access it better. I did it through the driver's side wheel well, but that took so long to do that I had wished I had just pulled the plenum.

Love the location on my '01 3.4. There probably is a reason, but I don't see why they moved it.

I was doing an engine swap when I found it, whether it needed changed or not I said "That's getting changed right now" before the engine went in. It's by far the dumbest location I've ever seen a filter in.

It's not that bad if you have a body lift. I was able to change mine almost as quick as an oil filter swap. Just reach over the tire and wrench away.

as mentioned I DONT have a prerunner 4wd suspension and lift or an aftermarket lift so im stock sitting at car level ride height

I do plan a break job soon so maybe with the tire AND rotors removed and completely out of the way, I can get to it to permanently bypass it so I can relocate to someplace more accessible.

I wonder, if I bought the fuel lines used for the trucks that have it mounted under the drivers seat, would these fit my truck?

I don't know. Different trucks have different line sizes, I would think.

just to clarify, I wasn't thinking of other brands but I was just referring to the 6 cylinder tacos which have them under the drivers seat but I do think there is always a chance it has a bigger line for the bigger engine

with everything "looking" new under there and under the truck I guess i'll just rig a remote filter by adding hoses and clamps from under the hood. I just hate the idea of using rubber if I can avoid it.

can anyone confirm or deny that the fuel filter must have british threads like the other stuff on our trucks?

I know I will order it or go in and buy one that is matched to fit my vehicle so this is just a FYI question in general asking if all the fittings on the vacuum, fuel, and break lines on our trucks are british threads.
