Hey guys, I need some help. I have a 2003 Tacoma and 4wd High will not work but 4wd low works great. When you put it in 4 low the dash light comes on and it works perfect. When you put it in 4 high the dash light does not come on and the transfer case does not engage.

4WD High is the first step (press button on stick), then stop/ neutral/ push stick forward for Low.

Interesting you bypass the H4 step and can go right to L4?

My Tacoma doesn't have the button on the 4wd lever. It's the j pattern manual 4wd lever. It feels like it isn't locked in when you pull it back towards you for 4wd hi. It feels like it shouldn't be so easy to push the lever to the right to go up to neutral or 4wd low when you are in 4 high.

Have you actually verified that it's not going into 4hi and maybe the dash light is just burned out? After you verify it's not just a burned out dash light I'd start with pulling the center console and then removing the shifter off the top of the transfer case to see what's going on right there.

Hope that helps. Let us know what you find.

Are you on flat ground? Have you tried rocking it back-n-forth slightly?
    Are your wheels straight?

Sounds like you're having trouble getting the shifter to engage. Don't force it...but rock truck back-n-forth slightly and/or wiggle the shifter slightly to try and get it in.

How often do you use 4WD?
