I haven't seen a lot of examples of how folks are storing their camping gear etc and organizing their beds... I am planning to leave my bed open, with a bed rack and roof top tent on.

I would like some weather proof boxes to store cooking supplies, recovery gear etc.

Should I be looking at high side metal boxes, or just Rubbermaid and strap em down,

    What do you all do?

I really want a set up where all my camping gear is in my truck at all times ready to go so I don't have to unpack and store things

Rubbermaid totes - the blue ones, with a lift off lid (no hinge); on the built in handles you'll find two drain? holes. I cut a piece of cordage long enough so that a loop just comes above the top of the tote when the lid is on. Put it through the holes, a simple knot stays inside the cupped handle. Put the lid on, choose the right size bungie cord and hook it into the loops of the cords that hang down the sides. This will keep your lids locked down. If you can find the Rubbermaid high tops without a hinged lid you can do the same thing. I like the high tops best as it's easier to put the lid on and it gives you enough room that your gear doesn't have to be absolutely flush with the tote edge. This system is simple and has worked for me for years, keeping everything dry and never losing a lid. Good luck.

Sorry can't get a mental picture but it sounds great. Do you have a pic?

I can help with a simpler description:

    - piece of string 1+ ft long, pass through the handle part of the bin and make it a "ring" with a knot
    - repeat on other side

Now put the bin lid on, grab a short bungie cord, stretch it across the top and hook each end to a string "ring".

    The lid is now secured.

For a mental picture, imagine you are wearing ring earrings, then you run a bungie cord over your head to secure yer hat down... Got it?

Ok, so if I understand correctly, when the lid is off it is still attached to the handles via the bungie+rings but out of the way since the bungie stretched?
