Just got the call from the service center and they want $1000.00 to install a new fuel pump. I found a posting about a 05 Tacoma with some valuable infomation. Sounds like the aftermarket pumps are better and cost less (lots less) and that the best approach is removing the bed vs dropping tank.
Can anyone speak to this, I have basic tools, friends and some know how. Should I take this on or get fleeced?

I replaced mine by dropping the tank in my garage..... alone :D

It was not too hard, basic tools. Some of the fuel neck connections were tough to get off as well as the connections on the tank itself, with an extra pair of hands it is quite easy.
Run the tank as low as possible to make it lighter.

I will recommend a strap wrench for removing the fuel tank cap.
