Big Green Egg, a quality kamado grill is the key, you have to be leak free and have total control of draft/vent. I had a high dollar smoker and it had nothing on the egg other than capacity.

I like propane for quickness, I use the charcoal smoker/grill for better flavor...I prefer mesquite chips.

Seems to be a lot of misplaced love for the overpriced ceramic grills in the thread. They are WAY overpriced for the amount of cooking area you get, easily cracked, and not something I would ever own. So what if they are insulated, never been an issue for me using metal walled grills.

I prefer lump charcoal for grilling just love the taste it imparts. I've had many a gas grills and I've used the wood chips in them just never got that same flavor. Now I do charcoal for grilling but to be honest my grilling has become a lot less since I have gotten my Traeger smoker. I do just about everything in there now. :)

I grill so much in the summer that my weber propane grill cant be beat. If your lazy, propane grilling is better than no grilling. 3-4 times a week is too much to deal with charcoal after a long day at work. special occasions, the weber kettle comes out.

Every christmas my family comes over to my house, roughly 30 people, and we start a big ole fire with maple splits, once it burns down, we place a large 2' x 3' stainless grate over it and grill 1" ribeyes. Before the steaks go on, we throw a few splits of green applewood.

I have the best of both worlds I start the Lump with propane then turn the gas off & cook on the charcoal. The Speed of propane without the smell of lighter fluid.
