let me start off saying i have searched this tire size up and down for awhile. i have a 2012 double cab, with a bilstein 2.5" lift. 2" in the rear with mickeythompson classic lock wheels 4.5" backspacing. im looking to run theses tires in the future and would like to make the trimming and cutting look professional and have it done properly. any inputs?

it depends. I didnt have to do any cutting or trimming with 2.5 inch and 285's, but I got A/Ts instead of M/Ts

FYI this is a 34 inch diameter tire. So 285/75/16 comparisons are not going to help cause they need much less chop chop. I know this isn't an answer but might help filter some crap from this thread.

True, it is not directly relevant to you.
However, I was looking at going from 265/70/17 to 285/70/17 or 285/75/17, and it is interesting in that regard.
    Thanks.

so whats everyones opinions? go with a 285/70/17 or go 285/75/17? 35's are too much but i dont go offroad if i do its trails to pull people out or on the beach. my tires now have a good inch and a half from the back of the tire to the cab mount, and i know 285/70/17s will fit. but id like a 34 :D

285/75/16 = 285/70/17 I had to cut the front fender box ( little box under the fronts. Rubbed at full lock. Then had to cut the rears of the front fenders too. Each Tacoma seems to be different some people don't have to cut much and some are cutting more a lot more than others. backspacing is also going to play a big role on your cutting as well. what size wheels and specs?

See what rubs. Bend or cut it out of the way. Repeat. Nobody can tell you exactly what's going to rub on YOUR truck with YOUR alignment settings with YOUR particular tire and rim size, and YOUR particular driving style. (e.g. some folks never go full lock, or never full lock backing up, or never notice rubbing unless it's loud enough to wake the dead, etc...)

It should go without saying, but I'll say it, that this technique does NOT apply to any control arm rubbing issues. :D
