Just finished putting in a new PDM throw out bearing in my 2008 Taco. After getting the tranny and everything back in, I am now unable to shift forward(in regards to shifter position) so 2nd, 4th, and 6th shift fine, but I am unable to shift into 1st, 3rd, 5th, or reverse. It doesn't matter if the truck is on or off or if the clutch is in or out the tranny acts the same. Any ideas?

I am going to go with the thought that there is an issue with the shifter as mentioned above . Pull the shifter and double check that its fitting into the female shifter bushing properly .If all worked fine before the clutch job , its the only thing that stands to reason

    Lots baby!
Besure you put the shifter in the right direction. It is possible to put in backwards.

Yeah I have pulled the shifter off and everything looks good, I made sure the yoke was seated correctly in the bushing and no matter how much I play with that I still cannot get it to fully engage in gear.

    How does nuetral feel ?
Does neutral feel the same as it did before the clutch job ?
Your profile doesnt list if we are working on a 4x4 or 2wd .
    what size engine ?
Did you stand the transmission on end while replacing the clutch ? Did you try and force the input shaft into the clutch ?
At this point in time , I beleive you have a detent/interlock issue . The transmission thinks you are in gear when you try to select all the upper shift selections .
Interlocks prevent shifting into two gears at the same time .
Detents hold the transmission in the gear you select .
Select neutral and remove your detents /interlocks one at a time and give them a good cleaning.....but be good and sure you are actually in neutral.
I am assuming there must be a lotta miles on the trans

This diagram shows the detent springs and balls . The trick is getting the detent selector back to the center position for each shift fork http://www.customtacos.com/tech.old...6toyrm/06toypdf/06rmsrc/rm2006ta/03200510.pdf

Gearcruncher: The truck is a 4x4 4.0L with 92K on it. The transmission was kept horizontal while out, and it felt like the input shaft went in smoothly although I did not use an alignment tool.
Neutral feels the same as do going into 2, 4, 6
Clutch is adjusted correctly and feels very smooth (fully engages and disengages)

Thanks for the update . I still believe you have an interlock/detent issue at this point .
All I can recommend at this point is rocking the truck back and forth a couple of times in gear by hand in an attempt to get the detents/interlocks to align with the neutral position .
As crazy as this sounds, its the only quick fix I can think of .
If that doesnt work , you have no choice but to confirm your detents/interlocks on your shift forks are " ALL " in the neutral position .

Okay thank you, Could you expand on the rocking back and forth? Should I put it in second and rock it using the clutch, Or put it in first and push the truck back and fourth till it pops into gear?
If that doesn't work the truck will be headed to the transmission shop

You have a very unusual issue .
Have seen this on high mileage vehicles but not much at your mileage. Its a guess here but I beleive your transmission has a lot of end play .
Find a hill , select 4x4 low in 2nd gear and move the truck up the hill . feather the clutch as you are going down the hill . This should compensate for the gearing inside the transmission moving from one end of the transmission casing to the other end of the transmission casing .Helical gearing inside the transmission causes thrust loading inside the transmission .
Your original post indicates you cant select 1st gear wether the engine is running or off . Dont wanna steer you wrong . Are you able to select 1st gear at all ?

Edit : just looked at the shifter mechanism in the diagram . remove the shifter and verify all the shift forks are aligned .You have to remove the 4 bolts on the shifter to verify this.
Although i have never seen this happen , its possible a shift fork jumped out of the nuetral position when you were changing out the clutch.
One of the forks could have moved forward ....its worth removing the 4 bolts to check

I am not able to select first at all.
I tried taking off the four bolts but it is difficult to pop that cover off, ill have to go get a plastic hammer of sorts to get it.... Will keep this updated.
    Thank you

The housing with the 4 bolts is stuck with RTV silicone . Got my fingers crossed , but as I mentioned ,I have never seen this happen . I would be very suprised if this was the issue but worth the try . Detents and interlocks usually prevent this from happening . Your trans would have a mile of end play if this were the case .
Edit again : while you have the 4 bolts and shifter housing removed , see if you can move the shift forks from front to rear . Once you have stroked each shift fork from front to back , place each fork in the center position . You should feel 3 clicks for each shift fork .

Thank you for taking time out of your day to respond. Here is a pic of what's underneath the plate. How can anything be accessed, adjusted, or even looked at beyond here?
